Anyone using mapmyride.com? For fun? For training? I just visited it recently and wonder if it will help me take the season a bit more serious.
Thanks.

This post was in the Clydesdale Forum (first post, specifically, rest are unrelated to mapmyride).
I've used mapmyride a few times, and not just overly impressed with it- a few bugs and irritating features in it.

I'll use mapmyride to check out a new area I haven't been to, and get some distance info.

I've had pretty good luck using mapmyride to find new routes in a particular area. My wife and I like to ride out in western New Jersey on weekends, and I've found some great rides through mapmyride.

I've used it to check out elevation on routes I've done in Upstate NY and also to check out routes I plan to do. I was suprised to see the total elevation of a ride I mapped though Catskill Mt Park. I might have to save that one until a little later in the season... :)

Not totally safe to use in rural Virginia unless you ride a mountain bike. It doesn't have any way to distinguish paved vs. unpaved roads that I know of. I see plenty of sweet routes I would love to use on the map, but they're inevitable little better than old cowpaths.

I have a 14 mile year round commute to work. In the nice weather months I extend my routes to meet a 10 week training schedule for a century that has specified daily mileage quotas. Since this is my commute, I want to get the miles in, up to 30, without going beyond, and Map-My-Ride is good to figure out routes. Similarly, on my Saturday long rides, up to 75 miles I can get my miles in pretty close to the quota using MMR.
For me, having a goal, be it a destination or mileage quota, motivates me to ride farther, mainly because I am time-limited to just go out and ride aimlessly.

I was just checking mapmyride here in my area. I see one spot where Road A connects to Road B and it just doesn't show that connection. So every time I map through there, I have to turn off the "follow roads" options. Then I got to noticing just now that one alley near my house is shown as a road on the map.
A couple of weeks ago, I planned out a ride in an area where I hadn't ridden before. Got over there, and found two different spots where I had planned to ride where the roads just weren't there or were permanently closed off. So I went maybe 3 or 4 miles out of my way. The frustrating part is, I don't see any way to correct these. Yahoo maps showed the same errors, but I was able to send in the corrections to their map supplier. But I don't see any way to do that on mapmyride. It's just going to stay wrong.

Thanks all for your replies. Sounds like there are still kinks to be worked out, but might be fun for exploring new places and having some distance and elevation data to compare rides.
I've been using it for a a year and it works for me. Most recently I have been scheduling workouts on my training log so I'm less likely to miss them. Gives lots of options to distinguish between a spinning class and a road ride. Also good to see accumulated mileage, compare last year with this year etc.
I don't see a point in whining about online map features as having them at all is incredible helpful, and we should all be prepared for a little twist here and there.

Hi,
I'm trying to find a trail that enables me to park at the Falls Church Metro Station and bike it to my office near L'enfant Plaza metro. Can anyone suggest a route? I'm a beginner. Thanks!
