OK, firstly I have already searched through here and I AM going to do it the Sheldon way (big big).

But I do have one qquestion, I have used a couple of online chain length calculators. My chainstay is 43cm, my LF is 44T and my LR is 34T. And according to the online calculators I need 55 links.

Now here is my query - my chain says 114 links. It won't be until the weekend until I put everything together and offer the chain up, so in the mean time...

Is the number of links in the chain double what I need (I very much doubt this) or do the online calculators and the packaging of the chain differ in what they CLASS as a link (sounds more likely).

The 55 links the calculator gave you are full 1-inch links consisting of 1 set of outer plates and 1 set of inner plates, each a 1/2 inch long. The "114 links" is 114 of these 1/2 "links", or 57 1-inch full links.

This link will pretty much tell you what you need to know about chains (from the late bicycle guru Sheldon Brown):

I should have been more specific since you obviously read Sheldon on sizing the chain. Read the "Chains: Old and New" section of the article.
