I'm surprised you live in the land where one of the best trike makers, the Inspired Cycle Engineering (ICE - Trice trikes), is located and you can't find one to try. They are not entry-level trikes but you also posted that you intend to put a Rohoff hub on what you buy. That alone would add half or even more to the cost of some entry level recumbents. You may then possibly end up with a mediocre handling recumbent with an expensive option. Try looking at the recumbent specific website bentrideronline. Log on to their messageboard www.bentrideronline.com/messageboard, go to the new-to-recumbent listings, and ask if anyone in your part of the UK will let you try out their trike or bike. There are a lot of UKers who post there as well, particularly trike enthusiasts.
BTW Serious riding on a trike? Would you consider 18,000+ miles since 2003 to be serious?
