where do bike shops get their quality rags from?

I usually just by a "box o' rags" at the paint store. All cotton, usually t-shirt type material. CHEAP, may not have nice bindings around the edges, but I don't worry much about getting them too greasy or having to clean them. Essentially disposable. If you want the nice ones with the bound edges, check out SAMS club, you can usually find a good assortment from cotton to terry and in between for a reasonable price.

You can buy them from auto-parts stores. Just don't wash them in the washing machine when you're done. DAMHIKT

At our shop we use the blue "paper towels" They work well and are cheap. You can get them just about anywhere, even the grocerystore.

For auto and equipment repair I use a mix of the blue towels and red shop rags. You can get the red shop rags from any auto parts place or a Northern or Harbor freight. If you need them commercialy(sic) get in touch with a work clothing supplier, the guys that come by each week and pick up your dirties and leave you with clean uniforms, they will also supply shop rags and wash them. I believe you can also do a one time buy from them.

I recycle all my old T shirts, flannel shirts, etc. Other than that I just wash the stash I have. I have some rags that have been in service for over 15 years.

That's what I thought old t's and drawers were for. Between myself and the three kids I never have to purchase rags. My favorite are old socks. If you put your hand inside the sock you can clean your chain well AND keep your hand clean.
