i am looking for a nice steel frame with lugs preferably, was wondering if anyone knew of any that are still in production, with threadless stem.

like this but not $2000. maybe under $1000

Marinoni in Montreal Quebec will build one for you and it will be around the $1000 mark but it won't have lugs. You can have as much chrome as you want too. I have one and they do a great job.

Kazane. They're steel. They're lugged. They're under a grand. You have your choice of threaded or threadless forks.

How much effort are you willing to put in, and how long do you mind waiting? The reason I ask is that 1000$ will get you a custom frame from either the UK or Italy (from the smaller builders) or even from some US outfits.

If custom is not of interest to you, the Kazane frame seems like a good bet. I saw a bunch of them being raced in Richmond last year and may buy one myself. Traitor cycles have one, but I don't know how track it is. I believe Alien Bikes, Leader Cycles and Bike Island have some kind of lugged frames available too, but I can't speak to the quality.

I'm thinking about this dilemma too. At this point, I'm leaning towards either a Chesini, Woodrup or Marinoni (tigged, not lugged) frameset.

Tons of lugged steel frame makers out there. I think my next purchase will be a lugged, steel Bob Jackson although I like classic threaded stems personally especially on a lugged frame.

I haven't actually ridden one, but lots of users enjoy their Alien frames. All lugged-steel for under $500, as I recall. Really though, if you're looking for lugs, you can probably find one used on eBay for a decent price.

I've got one of these, though I bought it here and it was a bit cheaper. I can vouch for it being a very sweet and nicely turned-out frame. Great lugs and track ends, nice paint. If anyone wants pictures, just ask; I'm proud.

Here's some pics of my Panasonic for those that are interested. It's a pretty nice frame. It's not exactly budget compared to a lot of what's out there these days, but considering it is an honest-to-god hand-built NJS keirin frame even the import price of $900 is pretty reasonable. I've no complaints.

Note that since these pics were taken I've switched to the DA old-school pedals (see pedal thread)
