Ah, heh, I was hoping for a picture of your pup doing a ride-a-long. I saw someone in Cambridge carrying her Maltese in a courier bag... the little guy was a content as could be.
Nope, but the other day I did see a family out on the trail with a fox terrier riding in Mom's pannier. Fun.

I saw a guy cruisin down the highway on a hog with a dog layed out on the gas tank. That would have been a picture. But anyway I don't have a dog anymore and my cats would disown me if I tried a stunt like that ;)

This reminds me of a guy that I saw carrying his dog while riding trough nyc traffic, I pulled up to him and told him that I've now seen everything....lol

I used to have a small-med spitz-lab cross that rode in my pannier. I put a towel in the bottom of the bag and then buckled the dog in so that his head and one paw stuck out. He loved to go for rides w/ me!
I had another friend who mounted a piece of plywood covered w/ a piece of carpet to the top of his rack for a larger dog. The dog would dig her nails into the carpet and hang on. She leaned into the turns and handled bumps and everything! :)

I have seen a dog pulling a bike. There was a bar attached near the rear end of the chainstay, pointing down, The leash was clipped to the bottom end of this bar. Since the dog was pulling at the rear wheel, it wouldnt affect the steering if he pulled sideways.

Heh, man, I hope the dog never got spooked or excited about a squirral or anything ;) I can only imagine what it feels like to have a dog pull the rear wheel sideways!... or backwards...

There's actually a commercial product like this for riding with a leashed dog trotting beside. I'm not sure it's designed so much for the the dog to actually pull; it's more like so the dog can't run off....

On the lakeside bike path last summer, we passed an aging gay couple on a pair of old English three-speeds. The fellow in front had a woven handlebar basket. As I passed I saw a long-haired little yapper-dog (but not yapping) in the basket. Of course I did a double-take, at which time I saw a second dog, almost identical, in the same basket. They were just lookin' around, taking it all in on a pleasant evening. One of those wonderful, oddball moments that say "only in Madison".

Carrying a dog along sounds interesting but my pair, Sunny (85 pound pointer mix & Cher 75 pound Yellow Lab) are so big I will need to come up with a way for them to assist in propulsion. Maybe some kind of treadmill tandem? Don
Well, I recall seeing a guy on a multiday tour who had what looked like a Jack Russel Terrier who rode in a do-it-yourself dog seat over the rear wheel. The dog did seemed to do fine. The mileages were up pretty high too over 70 miles per day. When the guy stopped for a pit stop, he and the dog drank, ate a snack and took a pit stop as needed.

No, it was midtown Manhattan, and while I’m not sure what type of dog it was, I’m fairly sure that it wasn't a german shepherd.

We have a little front pack - similar to an aviator pack for babies - that we've used for our Papillon (who weighs a whopping 8 lbs). I've only used it casually riding with the family on my hybrid - never with my road bike where I'm more focussed on a workout and distance.
I would like to take my dog along..
But... he is a 68lb golden retriever!!! any sugestions? :D

I see a guy some mornings while I am out riding who carries his dog in a canvas handlebar mounted carrier on an old fashioned 'sit up and beg' type of bike.
The hound is some sort of a corgi cross. He lets the dog out for a run along the footpath just out of the city centre.
Cheers,
Lindsay

How about a trailer? I've seen people do that around here and the dogs seem to really enjoy it.

A couple in our bike club always take their pet with them on rides. Their previous dog had over 20,000 miles, but he had to be put to sleep last winter due to a health problem. Buster is on a short leash inside the crate just long enough for his head to clear the top. BTW Buster has about 800 club miles this year.

I have a German Shepherd, and I'm pretty sure I won't be carrying him on my bike any time soon. But I just read about a new device for running your dog. Have any of you tried the "Springer" coil-spring? Sounds interesting, and I'd like to talk about it at my German Shepherd Dog club I belong to.

My hund loves to run with the bike. I keep him on a medium length lead, held by my left hand, and I train him never to cross the line of the front tire. I make sure he stays in the quadrant between the front tire and my left shoulder.

Hey, bouncybouncy, that looks perfect for me and my Shih-tzu. What' brand is it and where did you get it, if you don't mind sharing. That's why I joined this bike forum, to find a good idea for a bike seat/carrier for Sheba, who weighs about 13 lbs. A front basket is too unstable. Rear trailer I have tried--too distant for me. I'm pondering getting a trike, like some pictured here, or even a recumbent, with the springer or run-alongside leash. One that looks promising on Amazon is the Lets Go PetWalker for Bicycle. Amazon also has the springer for running alongside, with different sizes depending on how low to the ground your dog is.
At least one dog did a century ride with his owner at the recent Tour de Palm Springs

I used to ride with my sheltie running along side. That was till the day that she looked back, saw a pack of dogs a block behind us and ran under my bike. Fortunately she survived. The bike dropped, and when I stopped, I saw her running at top speed for home, while I picked up the wreckage.

My dog really wanted me to get her a Globe Live 3, and I could be happier. (Err... I mean she couldn't be happer.)
http://www.calamarichris.com/images/101007-live3ang.jpg
It came with a sturdy porteur rack. The rack is rated by the mfr at 20Kg, but I've carried cases of paper, worn-out HP Laserjet4 printers, and lots of stuff much heavier than the rating with no problems so far.
http://www.calamarichris.com/images/101007-live3dash.jpg
The dog bed was an accidental color match. The nice lady at my local pet store measured the rack and ordered it for me, and it slid right in, with no mods or straps needed. It's great because strangers frequently comment what a great idea that someone finally created a dog-bike.

Plus it also comes with a little picture frame on the headtube, so you can insert a picture.

BouncyBouncy's post count is 43, and this post is from 4 years ago, so you may not get a response. But if you ask me, it looks like a regular child carrier - here's a selection (http://www.rei.com/search?search=child+carrier&jxBest+use=Hiking&hist=query,child+carrier^jxBest+use,Hiking) from REI.

Currently, I use an Outward Hound Legs Out (http://www.kyjen.com/shop/index.php/pet-travel-gear/carriers-slings-for-small-dogs.html) carrier when riding with my Pomeranian. Started her out using a rucksack, but she decided off the bat that she did not want to see where we had been, but where we were going. Since she rides up front, she also wears a pair of Doggles ILS (http://doggles.com/eyewear.html) and a 'bike helmet' made from a plastic wiffle ball.

Quoted for truth. I hate those little bastards, and I own a mini-daschund.
On my long bike, I have a large Wald basket that mounts to the fork eyelets. I lay some cardboard in the bottom and then place a blanket on top. Her harness then clips to the basket. Doesn't give her a lot of room, but she still manages to wobble the fork a bit if she sees a squirrel. Put her in that for a ride to the local park, and then let her out on a leash, and do laps around the park with her running on the right side. Then back in the basket she goes and we ride the roads home.
If and when I ever go on a tour, I'm hoping to bring the little ***** with me.
I have seen a number of people do it. I saw a guy who had rigged up a little wooden platform on top of his rear rack. His Jack Russel Terrier used to sit there. He was on a short leash. If he fell off, I guess he would strangle. I guess he never fell off. But I was on a multiday ride with them once. The little dog looked very happy with the arrangement. Who am I to question it?

Thanks for all the responses to my question about carrying a dog while biking. Love the pictures!
Just some ideas: the Springer and other attached "leashies" have a rigid bar that keeps the dog away from the wheels, with a little play with an adjustable leash extension. If I keep her on a harness instead of a neck collar, she won't choke or strangle if she slips out of a basket. Also, if she goes swimming, I can drag her out or up the bank by the harness. Would never go back to a collar, ever!
Just my opinion.

I used bungie cords to hold an old oak basket on the back of my mom's rear rack for her 5 pound mini shih tzu. She just lays down back there or pops her head out once in a while. I take my pitbull out for rides all the time, but he runs next to me. I just hold his leash with my hand....and he can definitely pull me!

Last year I rode the week-long Bicycle Tour of Colorado ride. Some folks brought their Chihauhau (sp?) dog along. (I think they had a family member with a car along too.) They had the dog at their tent place in the evening. I saw the gal climbing Wolf Creek Pass with the dog in a rack trunk. I think she passed the dog to a family member in the car before riding the descent.
