Are there going to be any more skills clinics (in the vein of the EarlyBird series) during the season that'll count toward my CAT 5 upgrade points? Or anything else, other than races, that'll help me upgrade faster?

If you're over 35, you might be able to double up and do two races like Cat 5 and Masters 4/5 35+ if they're available for a particular race.

Wow. Alan Atha's Racing Skills clinic is worth 5 race start experiences and even counts for 3 points for 4->3 upgrades. That must be one intensive class.
I'm not sure if Lorri's clinics count for race start experiences for 5->4 upgrades.

Yeah, I took this clinic from Alan when I was a Cat 5 for 5 experience points. But note that of the 10 race experience points required for the Cat 5 to Cat 4 upgrade, a maximum of 5 can be from clinics and you must still start 5 races. So, for example if you have done 2 early bird races and clinics you would have 4 points. If you then do this clinic, you would have a total of 7 points, not 9 since you would have 7 points from clinics but can only use a max of 5 for your upgrade and you would have 2 points from the 2 races and would still need to start 3 more races to be eligible to upgrade to cat 4.

I did Alan's Race Skills clinic in '07, before I decided to race, and didn't take the points. Didn't think I needed them. Who knew?

It's not that intense -- you've already done more intense in races. In this clinic you get to practice the cornering, bumping (on grass, at slow speeds), etc. at reasonable speeds, and more than a couple of times.

We did a triple paceline up Lucas Valley Rd. That was intense, for me, because he kept us close, moving, and focused. We rode to a deli, had lunch, rode on, then rode back. The paceline rotated the entire time. I was the only woman among 17 men. I came away with some valuable skills. Now that I reflect on it I may retake this class and see how much better I can be.

yup! my clinics count for upgrade points as well (and I'm more charming and smell better than Alan)!
