Folding Bikes - Luggage for 16" folder with heelstrike issues

Here's the sitch: I've been having heelstrike issues with the trunk rack on my Curve. Here's a decent photo that will probably show the setup better than I ever could:

Even holding the side pockets in with velcro doesn't take care of the issue.

I'd take this little bike on a short tour in a heartbeat if I could only get a decent trunk rack on it without either pedalling with my feet in an awkward position or wearing a backpack. Does anyone know if there's (a) a narrow, tall trunk rack out there, or (b) a slightly taller rack that'll fit onto a 16" folder?

I'd be okay with the bike being a little bit larger on the train.

Sorry, but you probably have to put the trunk on a seatpost rack.

u can attach the rack anywhere on the seatpost (as long as the trunk bag won't hit ur seat). and it would be best to get one of their many rear bags that is designed for this rack...quick slide in and locked.

btw...what train are u on that u have ur own private compartment with leather seat? amtrak? if so, what route and how much was the fare?

Looks like you could get it up towards the seat, out of the way. Also, I think I've seen some pretty narrow Novara trunk bags, but they were in the store and empty.

What about Brompton type front mounted bag?

Brompton front bags need a braze-on mounting block.
You could use a carradice saddlebag and dispense with the rack.

Jagee, the I've seen the same Novara bags, and they have side panniers in them. Might be worth checking out anyway, expecially since the velcro on my trunk bag is mostly de-hooked and un-looped.

I don't know, but I know how to find out:innocent:.

Another option... find a long and narrow rigid plastic box (like the ones they sell to hold CDs and DVDs) that fits on top of the Curve's luggage rack; attach it with velcro straps and mount your existing rack trunk on top of that plastic box. If it's wobbly, stabilize the whole thing with a strap or two up to the seat.

You could mount a plain rear rack such as the Topeak, and that will put the luggage up high and out of heel's way. An added bonus you can use Topeak luggage which just slides on and clicks in. See the Mini linky in my sig.

There are other seatpost racks which use bolts, for which you need longer bolts for the thicker seatpost.

Add: Depending on where you are striking, you could try setting the rack bag rearwards a little bit; although you probably tried that already.

Can you mount the trunk so that it fits further back and overhangs the back of the rack?

The Beto Rack (http://www.bikesomewhere.com/bikesomewhere.cfm/product/488/4688/25843?g=1) looks the most promising for now. I ordered one of those. I figure if it's rates to support a kid and a child seat, it'll certainly hold a light touring load in a trunk bag. Thanks, havm66z.

If that doesn't work out, I'll try the seatpost racks.

enargyandair, the problem is that the bag will eventually be dragging on the rear wheel. Extending the rack an inch or so might do the trick, though.

Looks like you've got the Dahon D3. Get yourself the headtube Klickfix adapter and mount yourself a Klickfix-compatible bag. No problems with heelstrike when the load's in the front.

If I remember correctly, clearance around the heartube is tight enough! I'll take a look when I get home. If there's more room there than I recall, it'd be handy to pick up a bag I can move between my Curve and my Pure.

Edit: I was getting the handlebar post and headtube mixed up. That would work!
