Mountain Biking - Am I the only one who hates the "IM Speak?"

I noticed this in at least five or six topics on this one page alone.

For example:



"hi i am nu 2 dis and i wuz wunderin if u guyz cud help wid sumtin..." etc. etc.



We need some kind of filter that will convert this into English. :D


I wish people could just type in plain normal speak, with capital letters and real grammar. I don't mind occasional mispellings but jeez I hate the "IM speak."

I talk like that in online games I play.

But not here. At bikeforums I actually take the time to see if I spelled things correctly.

Ex. of my speech in an online game:

OMG, dey r coming frum thr brije!1!!! sum1 helo mw!!!

I used to hate this style of speech so much that during high-intensity situations in games, I would stick to using "proper" grammar:

"Enemy left! Cover me while I - " *BAM* (This is where I die because I took too long standing around typing while everyone else was shooting.)

So now I use abbreviated speech when I have to, but only when I absolutely have to. When I'm playing games, most of the time I'll type in all lowercase letters and omit transitional words and such.

HAHAHA is it that much harder to spend some time and add in the extra letter or two? People are just making it harder to read and understand and for what? So they could save themselves a extra 5 secs max?

Yes...quite simply yes. I hate kiddie script even when it was first starting on bbses almost 20 years ago.

I've watched people typing like that, and the time they spend moving all over the keyboard makes up for the lesser amount of keystrokes. Good typists will burn Kiddy typists anyday. Keyboard were meant to type real English.

I wonder if it would help to have online games implement T-9 predictive typing on the numeric keypad. At anyrate, I usually use voice features during the very rare times I actually play online games... or computer games for that matter.

That's not too hard to do. As a matter of fact, I remember someone on IRC who got tired of a fellow channel member's l33t-speak spending about an hour writing a lex script that would convert things back to English. It worked pretty well and caught and reformatted about 85% of the setences accurately. I have written similar scripts to do things like convert words to morse code (using the internal speaker). it's pretty easy, I modelled it off the old jroff program which converted english to jive (jroff). jroff has been the model for other reformatters including ones that reformat to Swedish Chef and Yoda speak.

Actually they're not IRC scripts. Also I didn't write them. They've been around a long time. They're lex scripts. You use a lexer (lex or flex - flex is my choice) to create a C file that you then compile with a C compiler (I use gcc). Then it simply takes stdin (standard in) as the input stream of text and spits its output to stdout (standard out).

In order to marry it to an IRC client, you need to be able to have the client call an external program to reformat the public messages. I use EPIC (a derivative of the unix-based ircII client) which allows me to do this via an "on public" command.

I think it may have been born out of laziness at first but now it seems as if people do it just to "look cool". It's kind of like swearing. There are times when it's acceptable but someone who's just constantly spouting out swear words is generally regarded as trying to look cool (and often failing) or too dumb to utilise the words with real meaning in place.
