Came through with another round of layoffs again. We have a meeting in about an hour that I am hoping will address what is going on. Frankly, if the company has gone belly-up, it would be nice if they would stop tip-toeing around it. Its also possible they have a new vision...

Saturday I re-sign my lease. Was already planning on moving to a smaller apt to save some cash "just in case", but now I am wondering if I should wait out the last 2 mos, and find something last-minute if I am still employed? Otherwise, I was thinking a month-to month option (but that is spendy!)

Part of my heart wants to throw in the towel out here, pack it back up for MN when my lease is up (end of April).

I'll do the towel throwing around here.

You hope for the best, OK?

You hope for the best, OK?thanks! yeah, I am. Frankly, I have the cash to get by a few months of unemployment. Like everyone else, I'd rather not have to. ATM, I'm just trying to strategize how to take the smallest hit to the pocket, so I can stay on track with things I'm working quite hard for.

It might be good to start looking for what may be available in MN now and let the help determine. It's no good going back if you have no job there either.

Make sure you don't leave voluntarily if you have have some sort of contract regarding the relocation package. I know I couldn't leave the company for 1 year when I got the relo package to this berg.

I am not sure who "the manager" is, I suspect a board of unknowns (unknown to me). Either way, it was a startup, I knew I was taking a chance, just still surprised its happening so quick.

The advantage of moving back to MN is mom's basement, and saving a crapton of money job hunting there as opposed to here. Plus, I have more connections there.

oh... his last day was yesterday. I was sad to see him go too, as he had a real passion for the institution. I suspect those cuts were also at the direction of who I now refer to as the "seven dwarves" (vanilla sky reference, if anyone is a fan)

Damn, artifice, sorry you're getting jerked around like this. I can't imagine the stress you're going through.

In any case, it sounds like the company is pretty unstable, and you should probably at least start sending out feelers for something else, even if you make it through the next round.

I'll be hoping for the best, and keeping my fingers crossed, typing skills be damned!

Ugh, my best friend was laid off yesterday, because his employer is doing what most employers are doing right now, instead of taking a relatively small net loss, he is letting his employees go and redistributing the workload, which amounts to putting profits before people.

Yep....I'm seeing that everywhere. Doesn't it just piss you off? Companies can't stand a 1% loss over keeping employees.

I'm waiting for it to hit here. They keep saying they're doing everything they can to keep from laying off and have so far, but I'm afraid it will have to come eventually.

Who you talkin' to?

Right now I'm a full-time Sociali...er, student, and I work in a relatively recession-proof part of the economy, auto mech, (it slows down but not enough to lay folks off, even people who live in cars need them to run,) so I haven't really felt it much, but I sure can see it around me.

I think it has created more fear and everyone usually responds to fear by trying to take care of themselves first.

These companies are stupid. When the economy turns around, the existing employees who are any good will be jumping ship because of the way both they and their co-workers were treated.

Arti,
The job was good for the experience and to allow you to spend some
time in CO, right?
It sounds like you have at least a couple reasons to go home to MN.
I agree on all accounts that you should check your options at home
including the Masters degree, and the suggestion that you should
let the company make their decision because you know somethings
going to happen one way or another.
Even though you may/will lose your job, if you can
leave on a good note (if that's even possible) and maybe get some
severance pay and qualify for unemployment too....
You've done awesome between taking the bold step of moving out
there and experiencing a cool state like CO, and living wisely financially
not to mention your great attitude.
I can't imagine anything but good in your near/or not so near future.

Agreed.
The company I had been working for (got laid off 2 weeks ago)
shows no sense of loyalty to their employees (I understand in a
sense that it's just business) and their current employees see that all too clearly.

Thanks for all the warm thoughts, people. I'm doing well. Friday afternoon the big guy addressed the situation by saying the options were cut us back, or shut us down. High powers want to keep us running, and are essentially bringing in 'emergency support' to keep us rolling. They "think" they have made all the cuts they need to (for now)- wonder what now means? the next quarter? Either way, I've relaxed over the wkend and am ready to tackle it head-on next week.

Thanks for your thoughts. You hit the nail on the head. I've had a great experience here, and I will continue to. I am looking into what I can do for very short term leases in the mean time, but am not ready to walk away. The fact of the matter is, it wouldn't make sense to sit around out here unemployed, which is the main reason I'd go back to MN if something happened.
