I don't know where to post this so I am posting it here and in a few other forums as someone may know what the heck it is. I bought this off C-List just because it looked strange, the guy I bought it from told me he found it in the trash and only picked it out of the trash because it had Campy bits on it, any help would be great.

I believe that you have a very unique & uncommon Time Trial bike!! Looks like a nice tight wheelbase! Don't suppose there is a fork in that dumpster?

It's the only way to mount a front D for 2 rings up front...The rider must have wanted a geared TT bike w/ pure weight savings. Coolness!

Appears to be a derailleur-mount stalagmite.

Are those cracks in the dropouts?

Is their some underlaying Bondo-type filler on the frame in places? What is your best guess as to the frame material? How much does it weigh? In any case it looks neat and interesting.

Neither, my best guess is fiber glass or carbon, but Im leaning towards fiber glass as it really goesnt appear to be carbon.

jbonamici: Are those cracks in the dropouts?

Thats what me and bigwoo were discussing, it appears to be tiny holes? two or three just below the drops on the frame, what appears to be cracks on the drops are just cracks in the paint.

Really cool.

I can only guess an hour attempt bike? Did those have derailleurs?

I suggest asking the folks at Campy Only.

Wait... I bet it was a special thing to hang parts on at Interbike or something.

^Good point. It could be a trade show display piece. Be careful trying to ride that thing.. it might break in half!

With a functional-looking derailleur hanger, dropouts, and headset? Seems unlikely to be a display-only frame.

Also, those dropouts look like they've seen some use, so it must've had wheels on at some point.

Slap some parts on it and take it out for a spin! Quit contemplating it and just freakin' ride it!

How the heck do you display the campy bits without a place to put them? Geesh all's I said was be careful, I didn't tell the guy not to give it a try. I'd hit it.

Definitely made me think fiberglass when I saw it.

There were some pretty wild looking bikes around 1990 recall indurain's pinarello... I wouldn't be suprised if it is carbon, fiberglass would be heavy. I think it was built to ride, but I would be wary of it now.. too bad there is no fork.

My first thought was...

And then I thought it reminded me a little of a vintage Bowen... mmm.

Is it fiberglass over a steel frame perhaps ?

That would still make for a rather heavy bike though.

You need to get that thing x-rayed to see what lies under that skin and do a metallurgical analysis.

They were there, but if you look at the pics (23, 24, and 25) you'll see that they were broken off long ago. :(

1) I'd say those campagnolo decals were added sometime later in it's life span.

2) I think I see carbon weave peaking out from under that blue paint in some of the photos of the scratches and such.

3) Not sure if I'd ride it, well, maybe not very far. I wouldn't pass up a quick once around the block, damned that's just cool lookin.

4) Perhaps contact Kestrel with the photos and ask if they have any ideas on what it may be. They may not have made it, but being in that "area" of frames they may have a clue who did.

That's what I was thinking. It has that "I can do that myself" look to it.

I had that suspicion (specifically, that it was wrapped over at least part of a Peugeot at the seat tube with that kind of a seatpost binder), for the stays do not appear even remotely symmetrical.

Same goes for the taper at the top and bottom of the headtube - it does not look factory.

Hi

I´m not 100 % sure, but I think that is a Bonfanti C4 carbonfibre frame! A very odd frame indeed, but not that uncommon over here in Europe, I´ve seen several frames/bikes that are very similar to the one you have.

yeah, I'd say same vintage... but I'm leaning towards homebuild. I would be careful ridding it unless you inspect it very carefully and patch the fiberglass where it needs it.

Use the front derailer post for an aero water bottle mount.

Go for a flying mile speed record on it on a velodrome.

Build it up quick and dirty with whatever components you have laying around just to get a better feel for how it could be.

You're going to have to find an appropriate looking fork for it, something aero and funky, no straight leg skinny forks for this one. Something contoured and aero'd.

Name it The Helium because it looks like it was built to float on air.
