I know this doesn't make it as a C&V quite yet, but I've got a line on a 97, LeMond Maillot Juane, my size for $700. I'd really like to know what this group thinks about it. I have not seen the bike, but my freind looked at it for me and said it's in great. Here's the bike pedia link:
My concern is the nine speed Campy gear. I've heard some "don't buy Campy 8 speed" because of the cost of replacement parts and I'm concerned I'll be buying a white (or yellow) elephant. On the other hand, I'm thinking this is a really good price.
I REALLY need to hear what y'all think about this. Opinions needed, Good buy? Average buy, nothing special or run, don't walk in the other direction?
I'll probably have to make up my mind this weekend.
Interesting - the '97 was OCLV? I didn't think Trek had acquired Lemond at that point.
My '98 was 853 steel and was one of the best bikes I ever owned.

I believe these carbon things were made by Calfee and the frames have some collector value. 9 speed Campagnolo stuff can be a huge plus if you look for the right details. Look for the last version hubs with the slotted caps on the flats. These are typically on '99 bikes but the Shamals in the photo are worth $400 or so. Seatpost can be valuable $100. Record titanium RD $180 and the heavy pegged end shifters are valuable as well $180.
All that could make the rest of the bike free, if the condition warrants it.

My 9-sp Campy Ergo's work just great.
And I have those same wheels. They're addictive.
If you don't get it, I'm 51 miles away. You won't find a better $700 bike for a long time.

A 97 is a Trek made OCLV, exact same frame as Trek 5500, 5200, 5000 series of the same era, as well as the LeMond Chambery, which came in white. Campy 9 speed is pretty flexible. The hubs can handle 9 or 10s cassettes, the ergo shifters can sometimes be upgraded to 10s with internal parts, but a true 97 Record Ergo right shifter can not. The rear der works fine on 9 or 10s drive trains. So a 10 speed upgrade for example would only involve a right shifter, a cassette and a chain.
I have a 97 Lemond Maillot Jaune. I can verify that it is Trek made OCLV. It's a beautiful bike, with the purple-yellow fade. I got a new bike a couple years ago and my daughter still rides the Lemond. I've had to have the shift levers rebuilt a couple times, but other than that, it's still great. Also had a heckuva time finding spokes for the Vento wheels. But I found that DT aero will work as replacement. I had Greg Lemond sign it 10 yrs or so ago at Tour de Tucson, but I never clearcoated it, and the autograph gradually faded. Next time I'll know better :-)
