Southern California - Has anyone here biked up to Mt. Lee above the Hollywood sign?

If so, which route did you take?

I've hiked up to the towers, behind the Hollywood sign a few times, but have always taken the narrow foot trail to get there from the Griffith Park side. I know there are fire roads leading up to the maintenance road which takes you all the way up to the towers.

Hey Roadfix,

You take Mt. Lee Rd. It's the one lined with the white picket fence. It takes you right behind the sign with all the radio antennas. Not a bad climb. Gorgeous views. I think the hard part is right before you get to the sign on Deronda Dr. Gonna ride the fixie?

Hi Vanessa...

I've hiked up Mt Lee Rd to the towers........by way of foot trails through Griffith Park, then reaching the road with the white picket fence overlooking the valley. I basically wanted to know how best to reach Mt. Lee Rd by bike. I saw Deronda Dr. on Mapquest so this is the route I'll use. The streets seem to snake through that area with many dead end streets.

I actually attempted this ride yesterday and rode straight up Beechwood up to the horse ranch and discovered that bikes were not allowed from that point on so I just turned back down and rode home.

I'll be on my Surly tour bike. :)

Hey George,

Are you doing the ride today? If not, I have a routeslip for that ride. Let me know if you want me to email it to you. I think Deronda pitches up to 12%.:(

No, not today, but perhaps next Thurs or Sat. Please email me the route slip if you can as the streets in that neighborhood are very confusing. I defintely need a route slip for this one even though we're talking only a couple of miles! Thanks!

According to the route sheet there's pedestrian access at the locked gate.

Thanks for posting it George. I don't know all the fancy-dancy attachment thingys on here. You walk up 2 steps and there a sign welcoming you to the gateway to the hollywood sign or something like that. You can see Mullholland behind the houses from the entrance. It's as far as the main street will take you. Right-hand side.

I live in Silver Lake, I would meet someone for this ride after 2:30 pm if someone wants to meet at the zoo parking lot. I have been trying to figure it out from the front. Thank you for the guide.

I just rode into work and as soon as my wife wife comes in to cover I'm out of here so that could be any time between now and 2pm. I'd hate to really commit to a time at this point as I have no idea.

As far as the Lance ride this afternoon I see they've already posted no parking signs up and down Sunset Bl which means the ride will pass right in front of my business. :D

Ok, I rode up there yesterday. Very nice ride and views. The climb up was not long at all, although Ledgewood Drive was fairly steep for about half a mile.

I've lived in LA my entire life(20 yrs :p) and I've never been up there before. I've been to Griffith observatory once when I was younger. It's incredible the amount of stuff you can see and do in LA.

I'd love to go up there sometime. Climb looks pretty steady and similar to Palos Verdes which I ride regularly, how is traffic?

As for daylights savings adding more time to your ride, for me that means waking up 1hr later lol.

Well, last year was the very first time I've ever been to the top and I've lived here for over 30 years. After being up there on hikes several times since, I thought it would be neat to ride up there by bike. I'll be doing this more often.

As far as Griffith Park, I've ridden up to the observatory like a million times.

From the zoo ride out to Los Feliz going west and turn right on Franklin Ave.
Couple of blocks after Bronson Ave turn right on Beechwood. Go up about a mile on Beechwood and watch for Ledgewood (small narrow street)
Left on Ledgewood.
Jog right on Deronda.
Jog right on Deronda again. Go up until you reach the gated maintenance road.
Go through the pedestrian access at the gate and immediately take the lower road and that will take you all the way to the top.

Thanks, Sounds easy enough. I think I'm going to check it out today. Probably no view being socked in and all.

This sounds awesome. Thanks!

Here's a little history from a Huell Howser episode: once upon a time there were two signs in the hills, the Hollywood sign, and then a lesser known sign on the canyon across (I guess to the west?). Advertised properties the same as the Hollywood sign did. The sign is now pretty much gone except for some support pieces. Can't recall where or how to get there, but it was neat to know.
