While I was on my ride today, I reached my turn around point and noticed a large, heavy man sitting on a bench resting. I stopped to put my gloves on, so that my hands would feel better. We nodded, and I took off. A few minutes later, he passed me I was going baout 13.5 mph, trying to keep it slow for a good fat burn. I keep a regular cadence, all the time.

This guy was pumping his heart out. He never got more than 100 yards ahead of me, because he would pedal furiously until he just gave out. He would coast for a bit, and then crank up again. He got out of sight, and I thought that he was gone. I rounded a curve in the trail, and he was sitting on the bench again, puffing for dear life. About 4 miles had elapsed.

I wanted to stop and tell him that he could get a better workout if he would slow down, and maintain a good cadence, and not push himself to exhaustion. I didn't, but he could have used a little bit of advice. Have you ever had the urge to offer some free advice like this to someone? I know that I have taken my share, and will continue to do so. I just hated to see the guy making himself so miserable with a good bike. Best -

I see the "on" part, but he's taking the "off" a little too seriously. :D

The Terminator,

Actually, there is something called High Intensity Interval Training that does well for fat burning. The idea that doing so will boost your metabolism for about the next 12 hours, so you burn more calories. It has been proven very effective.

Anyways, I'm not saying that's what he's been doing, just letting you know.

I prefer intervals for weight loss. For my body, they just seem to work better.

Me too! I can maintain or drop a little weight during the period when I'm building my base, but when I really start seeing results each year is when I start adding speed work and hard efforts.

I've always heard the opposite. To lose weight keep you HR down and ride long. Interesting to hear I'm not such an oddball in this respect.

I like interval training best as well. I really boost my max sustainable output in terms of wattage when interval training. It boosts the heck out of my metabolism to the point where once I attain my target weight I don't even have to watch what I eat, anything goes, and I don't gain it back while I'm in the interval stage.

The other day I did some pretty tough intervals in the evening, when I woke up I was STARVING, guess the boost in the metabolism would explain that?

I don't mind if others politely ask why I am doing something and then explain some effective alternatives. Its all about the approach.

Others may be offended by "free advice", but I'll take what I can get.
