My Fuji Berkeley has been getting simpler and simpler. First went the chainguards, and then I took off the smaller front chainring so it would only be a 5-speed. I've been wanting to go SS/fixed for awhile, so tonight I just took off all the gear-changing what-have-you and put on a shorter chain running to the middle gear, which is pretty close to 70".
I have to say, even with the 5-speed freewheel on the back, it's looking much nicer (I just love the way a singlespeed chainline looks, maybe from riding BMX a lot). I rode it and it feels awesome. I don't have to worry about bumping the gear changer with my knee anymore, and the gearing seems perfect for just about everything. It does make a little bit of noise when I go over bumpy areas or pedal really hard, which I think is just from frame flex. It feels lighter too. Overall I'm very pleased.
