I'm in the process of upgrading my 1971 Schwinn Super Sport to an Ultegra class drive train. I know, it's kind of nutty, but I've been slowly picking up the parts on eBay for reasonable prices. But I need one last part, a derailleur hanger that will allow the Ultegra rear derailleur to be mounted.

I know that people here have made similar conversions. Anyone have a recommendation for a derailleur hanger that will work (and a source)?

Thanks,

Jim

I did it to a Varsity, so I think it's a great idea. I can't find a picture of it on the InterWeb, but you can get a horizontal dropout mounting universal derailleur hanger at your LBS for like $5.00. It has a screw and a half-moon shaped deal that sandwiches it to the dropout while leaving enough room to adjust your axle fore and aft a bit. LooseScrews also carries them although as I recall, they are so cheap you need to order something else to exceed their minimum order! I mounted a older Dura-Ace RD to my Varsity and a XT to a Falcon. Works great.

It has a horizontal dropout, you have several options with your 1971 Super Sport which is the same year as mine: fixed gear, singlespeed, derailleur or internal gear hub.

I got one at a LBS. They surprisingly had a whole bagful of them.

They're often called claws. Campagnolo made them at one time. I suppose that would be the holy grail of derailer claws.
