Southern California - Sleeping Indian Ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How about doing a nice hill ride? Start at the Oceanside train station, since that seems to be convenient, then head inland to do Sleeping Indian, and maybe head south to add some more miles in.
I'm thinking March 21 or 22.

Either day looks pretty good for me at this point.

I can do it on a Sunday.
There's a loop that starts on the coast, goes up Sleeping Indian, W. Lilac, down Circle R, Champagne, Twin Oaks, San Elijo, Melrose, Palomar Airport Rd, Coast Hwy. It's about 60 miles and 4k vertical.

That route sounds good to me. After checking my calendar, Sunday would work better as well.
Is the route on Bikely?
Only the map is there; the cue sheet is incomplete.

John's ride? So there are hookers along the route?
I'm in!
and Sunday works well for me.

The route has hookers? This is an equal-opportunity ride. Some of them had better be male.

You do not want to ride your bike on sleeping indian at all.. There is crazy motorist and broken pavement and glass and dogs running all over the place.... nope just not a good idea at all I would stay away

i don't often ride sleeping indian, but it had none of those things when i was there a couple weeks ago. north river road just beyond sleeping indian is scarier imo. i didn't see any hookers or johns either.
i'm interested. all are welcome?

Sounds good. I'll try to make this one instead of getting drunk and passing out in a friend's apartment. Not that that happened.

I have never had a problem with excessive road debris or motorists when I've done Sleeping Indian.
The ride is open for anyone who wants to show up.

You're out of your area on this one, guacamole boy.
I drove out there this morning and there wasn't any debris on the roads until I crossed into Fallbrook. If SI is too tough for you, make the right at Morro Heights.
Here's my suggested route.

Hmm, sounds fun. I've never been up through some of those areas. If it's a Sunday, I'm in. If it's a Saturday, I'm in if I don't have to work.

Since most people prefer Sunday, the ride will be on March 22.

actually half of sleeping indian is in oceanside and the other half is fallbrook. Once you cross that fallbrook line just keep an eye out there are some crazy kids driving around in a truck throwing rotten fruit at cyclist... Maybe it is just a good idea to stay out of fallbrook it is just not safe... no not safe at all.

I saw the sign. One side says Welcome to Fallbrook The Friendly Village. The other side says You're in Oceanside - Go ****ing Home.
Throwing fruit. That's cute. Over here the little ones throw the blocks of cheese they get from WIC. The older ones shoot.

Sorry Cbad, I didn't know this. That mountain lion on your avatar looks very macho to me. ;) Hey, of course having a girl in the group is always an added attraction. :D
GP, thanks for the info. This looks challenging, but I'll give it a try. Especially now that I know we've got a lady in the group. ;) On another hand, I'm not that "machista" type of guy, but somehow it always hurts more when I have my arse kicked by a girl. :o :D
By the way, don't wait for me, the weekend of 3/21-22 will be extremely busy for me.

So what's the official route then? I'll make up some cue slips at work, all nice like.

Club thing. I could probably do both, but then I would have a day like this past Sunday, where I was dead at the end.

how fast would this ride be? is there parking at the meeting point?
CbadRider
03-17-09, 01:57 PM
We are meeting at the Oceanside Transit Station. There is plenty of parking.
I am not doing this as a hammer ride. There is a route slip and we will have pit stops, including one for "real" food (if you call McD's "real") at about the halfway point.

ok .. just a quick approximation, since im new to this, and not done any big group rides as such
CbadRider
03-17-09, 08:43 PM
This is not a big group ride, it's more casual. We stop and wait for people to catch up. I generally average about 15-16 mph when I ride and I have no trouble keeping up with the group.
I will be doing my usual blistering 4.2 mph up Sleeping Indian hill. :p
Edit: We will have a shorter route slip available for those who feel they might not want to do the full distance.

I took the steep part off the routeslip. The detour still ends up at the top but it's nicer to ride up.

You've been waiting for this ride to kick my arse, haven't you? :D I'll keep an eye on this forum, hopefully Cbad or you will come up with another cool ride soon. By the way, anyone here doing the Alpine Challenge at the end of April?

Hopefully next year.

Thanks Frank but I'm doing the Tour of Phoenix on Saturday (April 4), so I don't think I'll feel spunky enough to ride on Sunday. Anyway, I'll definitely come to ride in your area. I want to do the San Luis Rey race, but before I make a complete fool of myself, I want to ride the course and see what it looks like. I believe it is one tough SOB.

Hey Frank,
I still plan on making the ride even though I've been laid up the past three days fighting a miserable cold. I've missed 2 days of work and 3 days of riding and I'm getting antsy. With a little luck I'll be riding tomorrow. If I'm feeling OK I may do the NCCC ride ( Couser Double) on Saturday too.
Mike
But the snipers might.
Since I am the only one smart enough to bring a knife to a gun fight the snipers might spare me... and if not then it is a good thing I filled out my life insurance and 401k beneficiary forms this week.

I'll be doing a similar ride, though on Saturday, starting at the same place. Looks like fun though. My plan is 75 miles, unknown climb, via Oceanside, Fallbrook, Pala, Valley Center, Escondido, then back to Oceanside. I'm just hoping I don't underestimate the climb like I did last time, as I ended up with a nice 1500' climb I didn't anticipate. Oh it was fun though!

The weather gurus are now predicting rain for Sunday. If it's light/intermittent I still want to ride.

Supposedly the rain will be a side show to thunderstorms and 15 - 20 mph winds. Should be fun.

I think I'm actually in decent enough shape for this, but I can 105% guarantee that I'll be hungover. Have fun.
