Not so much....large european woodpecker is a bit bigger than that, if my sense of scale does not deceive me.

I believe that's a pileated woodpecker - we have 3 woodpeckers in NY and that's the biggest - seen it once. My ex-boyfriend has a house in the sticks and he had one around his house for a while. The first time he saw/heard it was when he was working in his garden and he heard a noise by him that sounded like machinery - and then chunks of tree started falling on the ground around him - it was pileat pecker.

I see more of the downy woodpeckers - cute little things

We have a pileated that comes and visits every year in the spring time. It would be fine if he would stick to hammering away on trees. But this little guy is obnoxius as hell....he has discovered that chimney toppers resonate quite nicely. Apparently, woodpeckers use their little hammering routine to attract mates as well as find food. Last year, this one did not find a mate until sometime late May. That's a long time to hear rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat every freaking morning on your chimney.

We have the odd Pileated sighting here in the city... for such large and noisome birds they are very shy and retiring.

Pileated woodpeckers are pretty impressive birds, for sure. We see them frequently in Vermont. I heard one this morning when I was walking to the bus, but I couldn't see where it was. They have a loud, distinctive call.

I watched one tear up an old railroad tie to get at an insect nest inside. :eek:


Norrisian woodpeckers just glare at the coconut, and it pecks itself. :D :thumb:

:thumb: yeah a downy - they're little and cute. pileated has more red on the head and is much bigger.

I didn't realize there was another woodpecker with that form. For a second I thought he caught a shot of an Ivory-Billed Woodpecker, which is thought to be extinct.

That is a beautiful animal.







Noisome mean offensive but refers to smell specifically.
It is synonymous with mephitic.
