No. Used to in the 80's when it was known as the two martini lunch at the office. Of course I didn't drink martinis so there were a few times I had a good buzz coming back to the office after killing a couple pitchers with a couple other people. The afternoon was a complete waste though.

That's a shame. A margarita would have gone excellent with my fajita's...

When I was younger, yes
I dont see a problem with it unless you're the guy who comes
back and acts like they've had alcohol for lunch.

I don't drink, so that would be a no.

naw, not socially acceptable in the states. too bad, as I was at a great italian place friday and a glass of wine would have been amazing.

Depends entirely on the company, the situation, and the job level.
My current job and position - absolutely not.
My previous job was working as a (high-level) IT grunt at a drilling company. A beer or two at lunch was almost a requirement. Especially if you with managers or above.

I've worked at a few places where it was the norm for a friday lunch, but not anymore.
A little puff-puff is a different story though.

Occasionally, yes
naw, not socially acceptable in the states.
Depends. I once had a manager insist on buying me a margarita at lunch as long as I didn't have to give a presentation that afternoon. I didn't have any meetings scheduled, so we had our margaritas. In my current setting, it's not unusual for people to go back to work after Friday happy hour, and we are allowed to use some common sense and identify situations where a drink before being done with work is acceptable. For example, some members of the lab, myself included, enjoy an occasional beer at Saturday lunch and return to work afterward. I recall that I was a stickler for not drinking until I was 21, but I made an exception for Friday afternoon happy hours at the chemistry department, which my coworkers and I attended for 30 minutes before returning to work.

When I worked for a small gen-gineering firm back in Ohio, we (whole company, boss included) would go across the street to the local brewpub for burgers and pitchers once in a while.
Where I work now, that wouldn't go over so well... but many people head down to RedHook on Friday evening after work.

YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF NAMBY-PAMBYS! Always drink at lunch. It's the fundamental right of all people to enjoy alcohol whenever possible.
That said, I don't actually have a job, so maybe you shouldn't listen to me.

Well, since I'm a teacher, I have 30 minutes for lunch, and being the young, "cool" teacher, rumors already float about what I spend my weekends doing, I don't think it'd be too prudent...

I have the occasional beer at lunch with a couple of my customers.

We use to drink a few during lunch when I did construction. There was a pub right next to the place we were building. I don't think I was of age at the time either. They just kind of gave it to us without asking.

Bad idea. But not a big deal necessarily.
I worked at a place where a few of the lads would drink
throughout the day which isn't a good thing when you
have to deal with customers.
I save all my drinking for home..... alone. Not a good
thing either necessarily.

I got no problem with it. My employer does, though, so I abstain. I've had employers that really don't care. In fact during the interview lunch from my first post-college job, I won points with my future boss by boldly ordering a Beck's (and giving him implicit permission to do the same). There were four of us there, and the other interviewer/interviewee pair drank water. The guy I was interviewing with said he was hoping I would order a beer. I think it helped me get the job.

Would if I was old enough.:trainwreck:
Probably not...actually.
I don't even eat lunch at work.
A coworker was telling me that back in the day living in NYC, she would have a couple of beers wtih lunch every day, it was the normal thing to do.

I had pizza and beer for lunch one day. That was nice. More often would be nicer.

If I was in a job that didn't require being übersensitive with my hands and energy, I would.
I don't but some folks I work with do on Fridays.
I was at a Siemens cable manufacturing plant near Munich once where they had a pop machine loaded with beer in the lunch room. When in Bavaria...

It's called liquid nourishment.
You should see my coworkers and I on business trips. Thank goodness that only happens once a year. I can't handle drinking that much regularly.

Uhhh... yeah.
Every job I've had since graduating college involved a few beers, sometime more, at lunch a few times a month. Even with the boss, the boss's boss, and other pretty important people.
Hell, my last job I had small BBQ's at my house (1/4 mile away) during lunch a bunch of times with everyone from the office. Then there was my boss's boss's b-day, haha probably the best lunch I ever had.
First job out of school, every 'going away' lunch always involved getting a little tipsy.
It really only becomes a problem when you routinely come back to the office visibly drunk and/or don't behave yourself.

OK, no.
In my younger days I did on occasion, but later when my career depended more on leadership, making good decisions and having enough presence of mind to avoid cutting off my fingers or falling to my death...I made it a firm rule to abstain.

Not a chance. I have a tough enough time staying awake in the afternoon.
If I'm with coworkers, the consensus seemed to be that we weren't to have a drink with lunch. I would still occasionally get a beer with a lunch if it was just me. I had to stop, because it would just put me to sleep after lunch.

Corporate policy (yes, there's a corporate policy on it) says it's okay. But my immediate management would disapprove regardless, so no.
I think the policy's there to allow the marketing types to do what they must ;)

I'd like to get into marketing, and my boss is a former marketing exec...does this mean i should be ok to get ****faced?

At work, no. The idea is that sometimes in marketing, you're taking clients to lunch and/or for drinks. Alcohol can grease the wheels for a good pitch. Sales can be the same way. Having a beer at lunch in no way equates to getting fitshaced nor excuses it. I had times where I wanted to order a margarita with lunch at the mexican place, but none of my other coworkers nor my superiors ever ordered any drinks, so I just played it safe.

In the U.S., never.
When I lived in Mexico City, almost always if it was a "business lunch" (sit down to eat about 3 p.m., lunch over about 5:30 p.m., back to the office).
When I lived in the UK - me, never; Brits, almost always.
