i think i just got scammed - bought a kelly knobby cross frame that the seller claimed was a 2003, but when i got it i found that the headtube was 1 inch rather than 1 1/8. anyone know when kelly made the switch to bigger headtubes?

Why don't you check with Chris? My husband and I each just bought a Knobby X (actually I gave him his for Xmas) directly from Chris. He was quite clear that frames made through this year at 1' and next year (2005) will be 1 1/8". The 1" info is on his website.

I considered a Kelly and his frames are all 1" steerer tubes.

Yall, any Knobby X pre 05 is 1" unless it was a custom. We started making the change to 1 1/8" on our KX's in early 05. As you will notice on my website Knobby X pages there are two I offer -- the pre 05 bent stay with the 1" head tube and horizontal top tube with a fork for $850, and the newer straight stay with the semi-compact virtual geometry and 1 1/8" head tube for a frame only price of $995.
The older style bent stay works best with mountain style compact cranks. The newer style straight stay (euro style) works with any crank (road or mtb) and it's normal length BB spindle.
note: there are about 13 of the older style bent stay 1" Knobby X's left in a few various sizes for the old price of $850 frame & fork till they are gone. Jump on em!
