Southern California - Lance Armstrong Hollywood Ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So according to Lance Armstrong's Twitter (tweet), he's going to be having a group ride in Hollywood on March 7th. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about it.

I didn't see anything about it on that link, but it's probably been buried by "news flashes" such as "waiting in the car pool line to pick up my kids" or "watching a video of the Foo Fighters."

Subject: Ride with Councilmember LaBonge and Lance Armstrong - Sat., March 7 at 5:30 p.m.
To: LaBonge News <LaBonge.News@lacity.org (http://us.mc839.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=LaBonge.News@lacity.org)>
This Saturday, March 7th, CouncilmemberTom LaBonge will join seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong on a fun, two-mile bike ride through Hollywood. We invite you to join them for this ride, which marks Mr. Armstrong's return to biking. For more information, see the attached flier.
The ride will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Children's Hospital, 4650 W Sunset Blvd.
Unlike Tom's other rides, advanced registration is required for participation in this event. The first 25 people to rsvp will receive follow-up information and registration materials. Please rsvp to: carolyn.ramsay@lacity.org (http://us.mc839.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=carolyn.ramsay@lacity.org)
This will be Councilmember LaBonge's first fun bike ride in 2009. Like last year, he will sponsor an evening biking series in Council District 4. More information about these rides will be forthcoming.
Saturday's event will attempt to raise awareness for the battle against cancer and hopes to generate support for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. (For more information about the Lance Armstrong Foundation, please click here: http://www.livestrong.org/site/c.khLXK1PxHmF/b.2660611/k.BCED/Home.htm)
We hope to see you on Saturday!
Continue to enjoy and love Los Angeles!

That's the day the Los Angelopes go for their ride at 2pm in West LA (it's been 2 months since there's been this ride!). Much more fun than lance.
Besides, Lance's thing sounds too hosh posh.

Do professional cyclists have time for recreational rides. I thought team training demands near slavery to group training for nine months of the year.

pros dont train as a group, unless its with their buddies. as you can imagine, with teammates living thousands of miles away, organizing group rides would be nearly impossible.
that said, i would hardly consider this ride to be about fitness. heck, even running two miles is nothing.

Sorry. I meant to include a link. And double sorry, I misspelled huevos. Lance was introduced to a Oaxacan breakfast favorite: scrambled eggs and grasshoppers. His tweet stream had a link to a photo.

I asked if the 25 get any kind of up-front cutting the line stuff but never got an answer. Do you have any insight into this one? Or do we just get to pile on with all 500? 'Cause in all honesty, if we're gonna be stuck in the back of a huge mass of bodies, (and never even see LA!), then I might bail. Being only two miles means it's supposed to be a mostly slow ride and last thing I want to do is to get creamed by someone at 3 MPH or fall over because we're not moving!
What's your guess?

My guess is that it will probably be much like any other big, slow ride...
There's a police escort...I was told that there will be a security checkpoint.
Beyond that...a great cause. :)
Definately great cause..I just did the Breakaway from Cancer event in Feb for the 3rd time.
Not to put the kebash on this but......at 5:30 it's just starting to get to twilight. So we ride the two miles in a slow 10 or 15 minutes (not even), end up at a theatre. Listen to LA and then it's dark. Now we've got to ride back unlit and unescorted to the parking area in crowded Hollywood.
So just because I want to know...why the necessary RSVP if it's open to anyone?

I guess I'll give it another day or so to see what the story is. However unless I'm missing something, if we're gonna end up in a pack, I'll end up skipping this. It's a lot of driving from Agoura for a two mile, 10 mph ride in the dark! Oh well...

But if you do this you can say you rode with Lance...;)
Most of the "Ride with Lance" things are big dollar charity rides (http://www.muhcfoundation.com/en/video_lance_2008)..
I mean, it's an LA "event"...I'm intrigued.
I've never been on one of the LaBonge (http://la.streetsblog.org/2008/07/22/councilman-tom-labonge-talks-bikes-and-his-recent-trip-to-europe/)rides, either.

A 2 mile ride that takes 1.5 hours???!! If I've done the math right, I think the pack will actually be riding backwards.
"But if you do this you can say you rode with Lance..."
Sure...then again I could ride in my own neighborhood at the same time and still say I rode with Lance 'cause I would have seen him just as much as from the pack!
My wife also got in for the ride. She asked me this morning what happens if we want to go in the theatre to listen to LA's speech....where do the bikes go? 'Cause I sure as heck ain't leaving my rig out front in Hollywood on a Saturday night! boy oh boy, this is just getting better huh?
You get the impression my initial super excitement level has dropped a bit? :)

Ok, I see how I confused you. I read on another page is that it was only avaliable for 100 riders. I just didnt know how the LAPD would be able to regulate "outside" cyclists.

Frank, I saw your tree trunk legs when we did that BF ride to GMR a couple years ago. You can run two miles in your sleep!!
Did you see his reply to me on twitter when I asked him what would happen if hundreds of people showed up?
"nothing we can do about it. we'll figure it out! it'll work out..."
Very cool that he responded!
Of course it will work out....for him! The more bodies, the better. After all, the bottom line is that this is to raise awareness of an issue. So we've got to root for lots of bodies out there. Our own complaints are just personal 'cause we would hope for the chance to ride alongside one of the truly greats and maybe get some face time.
But if LA thought he was going to show up in a place like Socal, with word spreading quickly via forums et al, and there would only be a handful of people, that would be short sighted.

500 total riders, coming from different allocations - some from LaBonge, some from twitter, etc.
A bike valet will handle the bikes while Lance and company give their presentation - will they pass the plate, or ask for the saved to come forward? Everyone (with ID) during the registration process apparently gets a t-shirt and wrist band and a number for their bikes from the valet.
And I'll be there! Woo hoo!
Vicki and I are on the fence, will have to see how the day goes and then decide what we want to do. If we miss out, I hope you will post a good report about the event!

I'm in. Sounds like it's probably a photo/film op for his organization. But hey, it's riding w/ Lance.
Check in 4:30 ID required. Parking not on site, they are recommending over by Vine St and take the Metro or ride to the start. Need to wear issued t-shirt to be allowed in. Check in closes at 5:30. If not checked-in, not allowed on the course. Bike valet confirmed as posted above. No word on total riders from any source so it's either 25, 200, 500, 700 or who knows??!!

Pretty day for a ride...
Lance was climbing Latigo Canyon today. No need to go to LA with thousands of others.
I knew nothing about this. The start is right next to my apt. I was getting off the subway train after a morning of riding with my friend in the valley. When I got off the train, I noticed about 10-15 bikes getting off too. "what the heck's going on?" I thought.. When I got up to street level, there are bikes everywhere. I took a few pics. (realized after I got home, my camera settings were wrong.. 'doh) Then some guy walks over to me asking if I want some chalk.. "I'm just going home" I tell him.. he looks at me like i'm crazy. That's my story..

I rode around Hollywood after getting off work yesterday and late in the afternoon rode by the staging area, saw a pretty girl at one of tables so I rode closer to take a better look at her. She asked me if I wanted to check in. I said no, smiled, and rode home. That's my story...
