General Cycling Discussion - Charity Ride Volunteering Question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Have other riders here volunteered for charity bicycle rides?
I recently registered my teenage daughter to volunteer at a charity ride that I was then planning to ride, and without any indication on the registration form, we discovered that she is obligated to raise the same amount of money as riders.
Does anyone know if other charity rides, the MS, Diabetes, ALS or any others obligate volunteers to also raise donantions?

Yes, I have volunteered, but have NEVER been asked to raise money to give them my time. I see it as "time is money." If they just want my money go out and hire someone to run the ride.
Nope, I really find this crazy. I have a feeling that they may chase off a good number of volunteers. Unless that is they are having to turn away volunteers anyways. NOT!
Never volunteered but have ridden many charity rides. I usually ask my wife to volunteer so she can be with me on the ride. She loved doing it. Haven't done any charity rides for a while, got kind of burned out by doing them all the time. Maybe we'll go back to riding in them and volunteering for them at some point in the future.

Yeah. When I owned my own shop the AIDS Ride people asked us to pay $125.00 for the privilege of providing tech support at a rest stop. I didn't want to pay $125.00 so that I could lose more money so I told them no.
I've done tech support on several other rides. Some treat volunteers better than others. They were all significant money losers for the shop, but at least we didn't have to pay for doing it.

I've never heard of a ride that required the volunteers to raise the same money individually as the riders. Most rides I've ridden or have been associated with organizing or helping with have treated the volunteers as an asset and asked for nothing other than time and effort to support the ride. If your daughter has to pay the same as the riders, then she might as well saddle up and ride with you.

I got into volunteering because I couldn't afford to donate money to all those worthy causes. That is ridiculous they want the volunteers to contribute money when they are already provide time and much needed support.
