Bicycle Mechanics - Bontrager Race Wheelset

The Bontrager Race wheelset came stock on my Lemond Zurich. They are also stock on the Trek 5000 and 2200.

I have developed a slight wobble in the rear wheel after about 500 miles. At first I thought that after fixing a flat, I hadn't reseated it correctly, but this morning, I took it off, checked, and sure enough there is a slight wobble, just enough to rub on the brake pads no matter how I adjust them.

It is still under warranty so it is going back to the LBS today.

Has anyone else of my approximate size, 6'3" 240lbs, had any similar problems with this wheelset? I haven't hit any potholes, jumped anything, or abused the wheel in anyway.

Take them back! :eek: I weigh 245 and ride race lights and have had no problems out of them. I do have a pair of Bontrager selects that had to have bearings replaced after about the same number of miles. I bet one of the spokes just wasn't seated well and has shifted, so that it just needs to be trued.

You ought to be a head wrench! That's exacly what was wrong. In fact, it was two of them. The LBS tightened them up, trued the wheel and sent me on my way!

I had heard the race lights were a stronger wheel and had considered ordering them for my Zurich, but both Bontrager and the LBS assured me the race were strong enough.

I agree.

I've got a pair of their predecessors, Rolf Vector Comps. The first time that I rode them, I had several spokes that loosened up so badly that I could turn the nipples with my fingers. I retensioned and retrued them and haven't touched them since. Give your shop a chance to show you some of that service that they promised when you bought the bike.

My LBS actually talked me out of the race for the race lights because of the hubbs and rims. I love them. BTW, My Bontrager select wheels have only been trued one time in about 2000 miles! The bearing problem, I think was over tightning at the factory. Since I put new bearing and a cone in it, they have been great wheels also.

Yep, had the same problem on mine Bontrager Selects. Went out of true after a couple hundred miles. Just be thankful the spokes didn't pop like my earlier set did. That's fun while cruising along at high speed. Unfortunately, your replacement set will also go out of true. You'll end up buying a new set to wheels within a year or so.
