I'm doing Island View in Goleta and Arctive Ave at Dominguez Hills... anyone else in?

Nope, my first post-injury race will be next weekend at Murrieta.
It's a bummer that they don't have the downtown IV course for this Saturday. I always really enjoyed the atmosphere for that race.

Dominguez Hills , something in a 4, strong personality, full bodied but refreshing.

Yeah... but the roads are all torn up for construction so it would be more like a cross race :p

Oh, I didn't realize that! I was assuming that it was a permit or financial decision.

They couldn't do it in IV and they were considering other locations (I don't know how seriously) but decided to do it on the Mothballs course because it is well established.

I don't think there are any cross races that involve scaling 8 foot tall chain link fences.

Oh yeah, I saw your other thread... didn't realize that was the race. Anyway, I'll be in the straight 4 and the 30+ 3/4.

I'm holding on too tight.
I've lost the edge. I'm sorry, sir.
I'll be in the 5's at Island View. Look for a really tall guy in a UCSD kit. Say hello.

Lessee... I'm just getting over a severely sprained ankle, a cracked or bruised rib (both of which still hurt but are sort-of manageable), a throat infection, and now a head cold (dripping sinus and dry, hoarsey cough).
I've got a 35+/1--4 race I could do... or a Pro/1--3. No cat 3.
I'm thinking, "No."
Too bad, 'cause the old Island View course was my first race back in 2007 here in California (I managed to just finish with the pack in the 35+ race). I like Mothballs' course too. I like those narrow, short, fast courses.
you catted up already?
Yeah, I had 5 races last season. :thumb:
..I'll be in the straight 4...
Oh thank god. Just can't picture you in a cowboy hat :thumb:

(sorry bud, couldn't resist)
I too am racing Dominguez Hills in the straight 4's and the 30+3/4.
I'll try to say hi (before you hand my shredded legs back to me sauteed with Tomato Garlic Butter sauce)
BTW:why did this one have a 'name' Arctic, and the previous ones didn't? I remember last year they all had some funky name.
vladav, curiouskid, what teams are you on?
Oh yeah, 20th in the 4s, 16th in the 3/4s. Met OCshark and vladav, and fat boy. Missed Kudude and Ryon yesterday/

Nice work, umd.
The Dominquez Hills course was interesting run backwards. I can't decide which way I prefer it, I feel like today's race was less sketchy than past races going clockwise.

Race a CAAD9 with Rival ;)

I've only done it in that direction.

You should go do more CBR crits then.

I have to say, I prefer the normal direction, having done each way once. I believe it's faster the other direction than what we did today, but the turn with the gutter is a little trickier. Today's 3/4 race had a lot of slowing/speeding up; my friend taking photos thought there wasn't much aggression being showed by anyone, and I have to agree. I made two attempts to bridge to a breakaway I knew was going to fail just to get out of the traffic.
Had I had more time, I'd have stayed for the 3 race. Anyone know how that went off?

good ro meet you oc, i saw umd but didn't get a chance to say hi.
didn't stay for the 3s, raced the 30+ 3/4 and the 40+ instead of the 3s so i raced back-to-back. like the first cbr i did, i did the cool down lap between races and went i came around turn four the pack was just getting rolling. fortunately i was able to catch then in turn one. nothing else really happened for me in the 40+, just pretty much stayed mid pack and rolled in for the finish.
in 30+ 3/4s i lead a friend out for the first prime and he won a pound of coffee. i sat in for the second prime and was going to again for the third prime but the front just kinda sat there as we hit turn four and i decided 'what the hell' and went for it off the corner and went up the inside as everyone went wide. i was too lazy to get out of the saddle and missed the prime by a couple of inches. i drifted all the way to the back after the sprint and of course it was 5 to go on the next lap. i was a little worried as to how i'd get to the front but everyone just sat there and i was back near the front in about a lap and a half. in the sprint up the hill from 3 to 4 we wound it up and i was near the front at the corner. i didn't have a lot left but the four ahead of me were pretty close to each other and there was a bit of a gap to sixth. i rolled across in fifth with enough cash (check) to cover my entry fees. if i can race for free i'm happy.

Raced 4's at Dominguez Hills. Stayed out of trouble and finished at the back of the pack. Achieved primary goals of keeping it right side up and finishing. Should have improved position with 1 1/2 to go, waited to long to move up and race was over before I got there. Conditioning is much better than last year, now I just need to learn how to race.

I'm pretty sure I saw you during the race -- on your specialized w/ the carbon wheels :thumb:
I pretty much hung out in the mid-back end of the pack, although I did take a flyer w/8 to go right as they rang the bell for a prime. Dangled out front, died and then used up my last bit of oomph to get back on the back. Not a pretty race for me, but at least no one went down.
edit: jmechy -- you were out there too, right? rockin the ucsb kit that doesn't look so 'distint'. I'm pretty sure I followed your wheel around a couple of times

It just kind of occurred to me who umd was in the middle of the 30+ race. It was the right bike, SRAM red, etc. Went and said 'hi' and we talked briefly during the race.
Umd's teammate won both the cat4 and 30+ races. The guy's an animal. I was a couple positions ahead of umd in Cat4 and a couple behind him in 30+. Our races were reasonably safe, but a little tricky to move around in the pack for one reason or another. It seemed like the pack was constantly rotating. One side would slow and the other would surge. It was tough to pick out where you needed to be.
Umd, how'd your older teammate that crashed in the 40+ race turn out? From what I heard, he might have broken a hip.

It's always having fun having conversations in the middle of races :p

Quite the animal. He got enough points to upgrade with his second place at Island View. If CBR counted for USAC points, Sunday's races would give him enough to be forced up. I think we'll force him up anyway :thumb:

Yeah I got burried back several times and had to work my way back up. I'm still working on moving up through the pack and actually felt much more comfortable in the past working my way up the middle through gaps, etc. Keeping in mind the idea of getting your bars in front of the other guy and then they back off... worked pretty well. More often than not though I would just work my way to the left side (the inside) and shoot up on the back straight (between the second and third corners). It was really easy to gain position there, as well as after the third corner. But in the straight after the third corner, people would inexplicably shift laterally to the left and cut into that fourth corner at a stupid angle. So it was always annoying trying to decide which side to be on... it was easier to move around on the inside but then get pinched in the last corner... or stay on the outside and get pushed to the curb after the second corner. I played around on both sides in the 30+ and decided that ultimately I wanted to be on the outside going into the final corner. 2 laps to go I moved up near the front on the inside, but then got pinched and lost a lot of position. So I positioned myself on the outside for the last lap. Came around the corner wide on the outside passing tons of people but was too far back still and never really had clear road to sprint, so I just went around people blowing up and cruised into the line.

It was in the 50+ race between our races. He hurt his thigh/hip... doesn't think it is broken and feels better than yesterday but still is unable to walk.

I was racing IVC in last years UCSB kit, I think I was the only one wearing it at the race. I graduated last year, so I'm not allowed to race the collegiate races anymore. However, I had to show my pride for that race.

I was hoping he would upgrade soon, but I've realized that he helps me more than he hurts me in races. Now I hope he doesn't upgrade for a while just so I can learn to race crits better by following his wheel.

Don't worry...you can still follow my wheel after Derek upgrades...well, at least for a little while longer (I hope) ;)
