BMX - Hello, I'm new here

What's up everyone? I just decided to join after visiting my local BMX shop and realizing I'm not "bro" enough to hang out at the shop, I recently got into BMX after moving to Seattle and skateboarding for the past 10+ years. So I got an all original '91 GT Interceptor and i'm sure there are varying opinions on the radness of this bike, but I'm totally loving it regardless of the dirty looks i get from the hipsters as i ACTUALLY RIDE my bike up the hills.

Anyways, I know just about nada when it comes to BMX stuff, so bear with me and I'll do my best not to deserve the wrath of the elitist message board flamers (every board has 'em)

If anyone is familiar with the bike i have let me know some preferred upgrades to make it just a little bit better, i'd really appreciate it, thanks!

Yeah i had to get tires right away, ended up finding a new set of "freestyle" tires for $5 a piece so i put those on and ride those for now. I'm wondering what makes the real difference between a $5 tire and the $30 other than tread patterns? Also, is there any advantage to riding a wider, knobbier front tire if you truly never intend to ride in dirt and gravel? A lot of people suggest i do this, but i prefer the feel of like 1.75" tires with street tread and high psi (about 50)

Well its your choice and prefferance.
But the normal thing is to run a big tire in the front with a smaller one in the rear.
I like 2.0 in the rear and 2.25 in the front myself, running 80psi rear 70 front.

* the $5 tyre is probably made of far softer rubber, meaning it will wear out a lot quicker, and be much more prone to punctures from random crap you ride over, and probably has a ridiculously low pressure rating (like, say, 50psi maximum)
* knobs will only help if you're riding on loose surfaces, anywhere else they will make it worse. on pavement the smoother the tyre the better
* wider tyres will provide a better air cushion for landings, and better grip without adding rolling resistance. if your tyres are mismatched you usually want the wider tyre on the front
* 50 psi is only "high" psi if you're a little kid. assuming the "84" in your handle is your birth year, then even if you're the skinniest underweightest thing this side of ethiopia, you want 80psi+ for bmx. otherwise you're going to pinch flat every time you so much as bunnyhop a curb, and bend the **** out of your rims if you get any decent air. if your tyres are only rated to 50psi, get some better ones asap.

I'm 5'8, 153 lbs, and I run my Maxxis M-treads (110 rating) at like 60 psi. any harder and they feel weird. so long as you're not really fat and the tires aren't sagging under your weight, you should be fine.

I hate running so much pressure in my tires that there is no give at all.

i run the same but at around 100 psi due to the fact that i way a bit more than you (~30lbs). so yes, weight is definitly a factor when looking at what psi to run your tires and id recommend getting a tire w/ a higher rating to the OP
