Advocacy & Safety - White Ford Explorers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Over the past two weeks, I don't know why, I have had six near-death experiences
involving white ford explorers. Not the same white ford explorer six times, mind you:
all different. Right turns right in front of me, lane changes involving the complete
extinction of everything in the bike line, running red lights. What's going on?
Three of the six incidents were on the same day. I felt lucky to go so sleep in my
own bed that night, and not strapped into a hospital gurney.

Watch out for white Ford Explorers.
Sure it wasn't a white Bronco? :D

Weird, I almost had one Tbone me this evening. Is there a pattern here?
For a while (not sure if it's still true), the Ford Explorer was the #1 selling SUV. And the most popular colour for all vehicles is still white. So combine the two and there's your possible answer.

Watch out for those Ford Explorers. Their under-inflated tires could blow at any instant, flipping them over, right on top of unsuspecting cyclists.
And why is it that the women driving those white Ford Explorers are always on their cell phones?

funny, as the driver of an old WHITE ford explorer ... never come near to hitting anyone
about 2 months ago almost had a biker hit me broadside ...after he ran a red light while going down the wrong side of the street.... the nimwit started yelling at me until i pointed out the absurdity of his situation...
good thing i have never had firestone tires though...my truck could have flipped over on him!!!!

To SUV drivers--contrary to what you will believe, the engine WILL start and continue turning over even if you are not talking on your cell phone. ;)

A bit OT, but I have noticed a large number of F-150 drivers with one hand on the wheel and other holding their Nextel up to their mouth. Does Ford give these away with the F-150?

Does Ford give these away with the F-150? No, but F-150's are the most popular pickup, and pickups are (yeah, less so than in the past, and less so than they should be) generally work vehicles. You're probably seeing a lot of people essentially running their businesses from the driver's seats of their F-150's.
This reminds me of a segment I saw on one of those pseudo-newsmagazine shows a while back (20/20 or 48 Hours or whatnot). Featured a guy who did everything behind the wheel, and justified it by saying he's a successful businessman and his business requires him to be all over town, and he needs his travel time to conduct business, yada-yada. Here's what was never brought up. When a business expands beyond the capacities of its people, it's time to hire more people. Okay, we'll grant this guy can't hire out all the executive decisions and important communications he has to do, supposedly while he's driving. And we'll grant that he can't stop long enough to conduct all that important business. What can he do? HIRE A DRIVER!

Some of my worst experiences with drivers on cell phones have involved convertables,
which is what makes this post (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=51473&page=1#post465631) so appealing.

New member, new bike owner, also a Ford F-150 owner, not all of us are jerks, rebs or cellfoniacs, though the implication wasn't made in the previous posts
NO flipping cell foney owner either
I bought it because I can get into it without scraping my legs, bending in half, or hitting my head, and the ride is the most comfortable of any vehicle I have owned
None of us may like cells but face it they are here and are here to stay and rather than get all bothered about them I just ignore them and when I see an SUV I automatically assume there is a cell plugged into an ear and drive accordingly
Since I started riding again recently I am doubly careful, but I sure in blazes have no qualms about following someone and letting them know what total asses they are, surprisingly, few will argue, they quickly get out of my way. Premature white hair may lead them to think I'm just a crazy old coot
I stopped riding 5 years ago when an SUV ,woman driven,on a cell, full of kids, ran a stop sign came within inches of creaming me. I caught her at a red lite. Parked my bike in front of here told her what a total f--k up she was. When I was finished I moved my bike and not before

I like Malaysia's answer to the cell phone problem. No driving and phoning unless you have a hands free device. I was in Kuala Lumpur for several months back in 1996 (cell phones were extremely common there, long before they were here in the states) and they had that rule and enforced it. Our host did his own driving, but his hired man did all the talking on the phone when we were mobile!

They have the same problem here. Two problems:
1. Nobody ever enforces the law around here (least of all during the tourist season)
2. Hands free is just as bad. It's still a distraction.

You got it wrong..it's the cell phone is on her....see cell phones hate fords, SUVs, and the color white....when you combine all variables, the cell phone goes into a fit of blood rage, and forcibly starts gnawing on the side of the driver's face....thus the illusion of the lady talking on her phone, when in truth she is in a battle to the end to save herself fomr the vicious tehno-beast form Motorola.
