BMX - My first BMX...did I do okay?

Hey gang. I'm a Road Cycling reg, but I've decided to try out BMX. I picked up an '06 GT Performer on my local craigslist for $100. Internet reviews indicate that it's a pretty decent bike, and the bikepedia page says the frame is full chromo, which I gather is a good thing.

Is this bike "rad to the power of sick?" Did I get a decent deal?

Yeah you got a decent deal. If I were you, I would change the seat and post, ditch the front brakes and gyro, and get a straight cable.

Losing the front brakes was definitely on my shortlist of things to do when I pick it up.

Any recommendations on seat/seatpost? I'm thinking I'll be slowly changing all the pieces out for white ones, and/or painting the existing ones white, so a white saddle would be preferable.

I would suggest pulling the handlebars back so they're in the same plane as the forks, too. They might feel a little close at first (particularly if you're used to a full sized bike), but you'll have far more control once you get used to it, if you give it a chance.

Hahaha I imagine this bike will feel strange as hell for the first little while, regardless of handlebar position. My daily driver is the bike in my sig...I'm crazy stretched out across that thing.

I'll adjust the bars as you suggest when I pick it up. I'll do my best to ride the hell out of it, too. ;)

The bars that are on it are hi-ten, so I'm thinking I may want to upgrade to chromo bars. Any particularly good bars you can recommend?

I'd advise waiting until you're used to it as is before you worry about upgrading. That way you'll know exactly what you like and don't like about what's currently on it, and can hopefully buy the right parts first time rather than spending a bunch of money experimenting. There's a fair bit of subtle variation in bars (height, width, backslant, upslant, my terminology is probably all wrong...)

Ah, I see what you mean. I'll definitely ride it around a bit before I make any decisions upgrade-wise.

That ugly-ass seat has to go ASAP though. :P

From what I seen ... you hafta lower the saddle so no seat post is showing, line up the bars with the fork angle & take of all the brakes.

For a seat, I would go with an Odyssey Senior2 Pivotal with any kind of pivotal seat post. I like the Animal one.

it all depends on what you want to do if ur like me i would go crazy on brand new parts.. notice the break mounts are on the top bit of the frame so it must be a fairly ok frame..

That doesn't really determine whether the frame is good. Plenty of good frames have chainstay mounted brakes, but it is a good frame regardless.

Oh, one more thing; is there any way of knowing what my seatpost diameter is without actually measuring it? I don't get the bike in my hands until monday, but I want to start lurking eBay for parts.

Just from looking at the saddle clamp, ( & the post doesent seem to taper down into the clamp ) I would guess ... its 22.2mm or 7/8in. ... its older, ( I could prolly tell you the exact year, if the stickers where still on it ... ) so that would also reinforce that . I have been wrong before ...

well of course it helps because if u buy a decent back wheel which has a 9 tooth driver and you have a 25 tooth sprocket with bottom mounts the chain will just drag on it on the other hand if u have top mounts its out the way meaning the frame is meant for decent parts..
