What else is out there besides the Stumpy? I don't like trek so don't bother with them. What does Kona offer? Any other smaller companies? Thanks.

You can get a Kona Roast, dawg matic
Stumpjumper! I love mine and after a LOT of looking I don't think there is a better value in a race ready H/T. Kona's geometry has always been lacking in the climbing department, IMHO. I had one and going from that to the Stumpy was absolutely night and day on climbs. Some other companies with H/T's I like: Orbea (Starship... 3lbs frame...), Jamis has some nice stuff, and the high end GF's are ok but not as light as I would like in that price range.

I think he is looking for something light weight so the Roast might not be the best best to do the job

How much does that Orbea run for? According to the website it only weighs 20 pounds!

Sorry, I forgot to mention in my post the bike is for XC so the Roast is out, and the Matic is a full suspension bike, so thats also out.
Thanks anyway.

Once you get past all the diatribe, Cannondale makes one of the THE best XC hardtails. You pay more for the frame, but as far as lightweight race bikes, Cannondale is up there as a "contender".
Giant's XTC is very lightweight and good looking.
With that said, I'm a big fan of Specialized products, so they get my vote.

Cannondale makes the best XC hardtails in my opinion. Light and fast.. I love them. Get one in whatever flavor you can afford.

^^^motobecane fly. this one is sub 22 pounds.
I'd go for a Giant XTC. I don't like Cannondale's hardtail lineup, but hey...
I love the gary fisher bikes( i have a big sur) also love the jamis especially the steel bikes thought they may be pricier(like the dragon)
oooohhh!!! get a kona explosif frame and build around it! that way ya can put whatever gears ya want on it... well.. for MTB steel may be a bad idea.. but just go buy a frame and put whatever crap ya want on it. (my bike shop says stick to SRAM). at that price you should be able to build a nice bike. specially if you get deals on last years crap. and make it tough! that way ya can just ram the hell outa that frame! maybe a kona hoss frame would be cool?
oh. and a 29" wheel frame might be kinda cool. cus that way you can turn it into a rough road assault road bike (you know the kinda roads i'm talking about... they're fun!)
