"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - The Race Report Thread 2009-2012

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Sorry to disappoint with a late report... but: I blew it.
I got 5th, the guy behind me in the series (PJ) got 2nd, and he took the series win. Still a total blast, and I love racing with my teammates.
We had a plan for my two teammates to do rotating attacks, but the other team had one hammer head go to the front and set a blistering pace (this guy has won P/1/2 races before... K.S.). So, that left my two teammates pretty gassed after their two attacks.
I was just marking PJ and taking it easy. Not a tough race at all. Really technical course, but that's fine for me. Well, the plan was to send teammates after the race win, soak up some points, then I'd just stay ahead of PJ in the finale to take the series. I should have altered the plan and started attacking when I ended up on my own. When I ride defensively, it hasn't been working out.
Two laps to go, a guy got between PJ and I. Then he opened a gap, which I closed, but two others went to the front. PJ jumped around the other side, and I couldn't follow. Now I was sitting in 5th with one to go.
We hit my kilo landmark, and the pace is just blistering from PJ's teammate fighting off these attacks. If I went then, it would have little effect (no gap). 2 minutes at 500W at that point, and I knew I didn't have the launch.
The course is really technical going into the finish, with 5 turns in the last 300m. The order you go in is the order you finish, with maybe one trade in there. I went in 5th, crossed the line 5th.
There are a lot of places I could have made something different happen, and I just didn't see the opportunities at the time. This enlightens me further on how impressive the pros are. Assessment, reaction, aggressive, fit. Hey, at least I can play and learn.
The part that's really frustrating is that I went into 2-to-go with a full tank. I should have launched with 4 to go. I can't believe my racing has transformed from waiting for the sprint to attacking for the long break. I still suck at sprints for some reason. Really frustrating. I hit over 1600W just warming up, but can't sprint. :wtf:
So, I got 2nd in M35+ series 2. That's two 2nd place series trophies this year, with one win in each series. I'll take it. Worst placing was 5th.
Yep, you pretty much sucked last night! Seriously it was a good race and your guys tried to make something happen but it just did not workout. I was wondering why you did'nt try a few attacks over the top of PJ early on and have your guys just sit on his wheel. He couldnt let you go and they could attack him when he caught you. Or you could have jumped on there wheel as they went by. Still you did good and it was fun racing while it lasted. Too bad it was the last Masters for this year. Looked forward to it every week.

Salisbury Cat3 Crit. 45 mins in the pain cave.
Third crit in as many days. Still getting up at 5 to be at work (mainly because it's automatic for me), working half days, traveling to the races, setting up, racing, driving home.
Right now it's a matter of holding on. I feel run over by a train. Last night I came this ----> <---- close to throwing in the towel and pulling out of the race. But I didn't and paid dearly for it. Around 2am I dreamed I had a cramp. It was no dream but I couldn't wake up. I almost slept through it. Ha!
The crit course was awesome. A figure 8 (see this (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=9431674&postcount=1876)). Second to last lap there was a nasty crash in turn 11 or 50. I don't know. The thing had Eleventy-billion corners. But it took out a bunch of guys. Fortunately, I was tail gunning the race and just went around it. Said a prayer as I went by and gave them my blessings with sweat, spit, and blood.
2 more venues. 2 more races. Some one slap me.
SLAP!
Sounds grueling!

Track racing last night. I was still a cat 3 going in and despite my teammate's best efforts they wouldn't let me upgrade beforehand.
Tried to help out my teammates and give leadouts the whole time, but it never worked out. Attemped to catch a guy who was off the front at the end of a Danish (a bunch of laps followed by 3 laps of win-and-out) but just missed him, so I kept going and rolled off the front for 2nd place by 30m. Led 12 laps out of a 20 laps scratch race, including 5-2 to go at full gas, and won the "field sprint" anyway.
Thankfully they upgraded me right after that. Next week the p/1/2 should be way more fun.

Huh. That's called a Danish, eh? A few weeks ago I raced a similar race - we were paced by a neutral rider up to speed and then released for 3 laps of win and out. I called it a Keirwin-and-out.

we weren't paced, it was kind of like a 9 lap scratch race but with 2 extra laps tacked on to pick 2nd and 3rd. Weird.

Sounds pretty sweet. One of the unfortunate aspects of life in Nashville is the looooong drive to get to a track. Too bad, I had a blast the one time I tried and I was (I dare say) surprisingly good at it.

got dropped>> jumped back on with 2 to go and finished 6th..
tough day, its not a good feeling when your cooked and you can't even see the peleton ahead of you.. You know that if you wanna get back on your gonna have to work.
It was good seeing you out again Matt, hopefully you can get in some training this week with all that free time.

Yeah, I was just being conservative. That is not a good racing style for me. Even in long road races, like last year I attacked like crazy in Manda and managed to win ahead of K.S. (PJ's teammate) from a 5-man attrition-break.
I'm still learning, though this is the 2nd time I bent myself over watching PJ to the finish. :notamused:
Congrats on a fine showing!

Portland Twilight Criterium.
Super tight course, people getting popped from the gun. I started at the back, and I haven't done a crit in two months. Not feeling very confident in my ability to kill it through tight city corners at 30 per, but willing to give 'er.
I keep on moving up as people get popped off. I couldn't believe how many people were being spit out the back. Huge gaps, everywhere.
Ended up chasing solo for 7-8 laps trying to get back on. Absolutely drilling it, for me, at 28mph.
I'm 5 seconds back and SLOWLY gaining on the field, which is half of what it was at the start, when I get the signal that my night is over from the chief official. I rarely complain about officials, and appreciate their time and energy, but I think that was a bit over zealous. Even for a Pro/1/2 field. I'm not sure that I would have caught them, but I thought I had a chance, and plenty of open road both in front and in back of me in which to do it.
Pretty disappointed in myself, though. I should have known to get out hard and fast. No one's fault but mine.

Statesville Cat3 Criterium.
45 mins.
I held on better last night. But I didn't have the power to move up that well. Several times I had to close a gap because riders were falling off the pace. It seemed pretty high, and we were strung out most of the time.
Still hearing people yell at me to do something. I was doing something: hurting.
Our team is still in 2nd overall. Most likely will remain that way because Carolina Masters has 300 points on us. We have several hundred over 3rd place.
Four races, four field finished. One more to go.
One more race this morning.

50 mins.
Tommyrod nips me at the line - for 13th.
Our team stays in 2nd overall. Our cat3 guy stays in 5th overall.
I felt good today and helped reel a few things back in. Tried to shelter our main guy. But in the end he was hurting from so much racing, working, setting up, getting home late. Just like all us Giordana Clif Bar guys and gals. It was tough on us.
All in all, we were awesome as a team. To go to each venue and set up, break down, and run the races. Plus all of us being older, married, racers says a lot.
Carolina Masters ran away with the Omnium overall. But we stuck with it and worked hard to keep our 2nd place. I think out of 50-60 teams.
5 races, 5 days. Done.
edit: Oh, and check this. All week I was praying to stay upright. Don't let me fall in the races. Keep me and my team safe. No problems - even racing in the rain. I pull off the course of my last race this week. Roll up a little grassy hill, my rear tire gets pinched between the grass and a concrete sidewalk. I over steer and fall on my arm right in front of hundreds of people. Jammed my right arm, scuffed my seat, scratched my rear der. But all in all, I'm fine.

Garret Wonders Race, Columbus, OH
Got my upgrade through on Monday, first race as a Cat 3.
Started around 60 riders on a 4 corner, 1 mile course that went slightly up on one side and then down the otherside into the 4th turn, then 100m to the line.
Sopping wet course due to a rain shower that moved through just before our start. I went to the back to feel things out. Not really into wet crits. Lots of guys shelling off the back and a few hitting the deck. Getting pretty comfortable after about 6-7 laps and figure I'll go on up to the front. Big pile up in turn 4 and I have to slow to about 10 mph to snake my way through about 7-8 riders and their bikes. Worked hard with a few others, but never could reattach. Got pulled after 45 min. with a few laps to go. Ended up 25th. I'd say around 16+ guys went down in this race.
Got a wild hair and jumped into the P123 race. Pavement had dried. Only about 35 started as there were some bigger races with in a 6 hour circle. Still, there was some big horsepower there with a few from Inferno and RGF had Grimm and someone else there. This race was a ton of fun. 32 mph through the corners with guys that can hold a line. Very smooth and very fast. After 15 min. I was living life one lap at a time. Just kept telling myself, "Try one more lap." Dangled off the back a few times, but they took a little break at just the right times for me to reattach. Ended up blowing up after 47 min. and I believe I finished 25th again. Last weekend I was racing cat 4, so I'm only used to racing about 40 min. Plus, none of my 4 races were near this fast, I had an avg. of 27 when I dropped out. I'll tell ya, when these guys nail it, they really nail it. I'll be doing this again.

First real race back after the knee thing last night. P/1 crit near Boulder, L shaped course with the bottom part of the L very tight (one or two pedal strokes between corners). Lots of big names - half a dozen team type 1 guys, a few Garmin guys, etc etc.
My only goal was to get my crit legs back, so I just surfed the middle of the field for the majority of the race. It was still hard and fast as hell. The power file looks funny - ether 500-1100w or zero. I stuck with the group, did a little bit of time on the front and off the front, and my teammate ended up getting the win. I rolled in near the back of the field, just happy I finally got a race in my legs.
Tokeneke RR Cat 4/5 22 miles., brutally hilly, finished somewhere in the top 20.
God damn that was brutal. I got dropped about 12 miles in near the top of a climb, half of it thinking about trying to keep the same pace for 10 more miles, half of it was just not being able to stay with the leaders. In no-mans land I waited for the chasing pack and dragged them around the rest of the race. The final climb I just kept churning out 300+ watts at the front, apparently popping people off the back because we started with about 10 and finished with a group of 5. The other four came around me at the top, oh well.
I've barely done squat for training these past two weeks but set new power records on top of those at TOTHT 2 weeks ago from 4.5'-11'. 315 watts for 10 minutes!!! Old record was 289! NP for 65' was 276, my FTP was set to 260! Torque is zero'd and everything, I had to check because I couldn't believe it. This whole unintentionally not-training thing is mentally brutal but apparently amazing. Now if I could just lose 10 pounds.
I guess this is peaking?

Another Tokeneke Cat 4 report:
Stayed at the front the whole time, jumped a little too early on the final climb, legs died, and i could not sprint.

Effin' lame crit. Fought hard to stay up front and position well for the sprint. Taken out in the last corner for the second time this year. Sweeping the field should earn you a neck punch.

Tokeneke 4/5 with Hocam...saw you at the start, but not an opportunity to say hi.
First 6 mile downhill portion was pretty mello....lots of coasting...then the series of stair step climbs after the dam. My goal was to stay in the front group....just lost touch over the last one. Paired up with one other guy...we caught two others, and then one more before the downhill on route 20...NICE pavement...a bit disappointed in myslef on the last climb...ended up 5th out of that group...10th? 12th?

I found it humorous that in today's race, the only person capable of figuring out that I was riding a slower-than-the-break tempo was a kid who is probably 17 or 18 years old.
Seriously; every time I was near the front I'd let a gap open up with two guys slowly rolling off, and make someone else close it, or ride what I figured was slower than the break. Basically, destroying any chances for an organized, effective chase.
Aside from the kid who launched two pretty vicious but ultimately unsuccessful attacks (said slower-than-the-break tempo might have gone up a click or two), nobody else bothered to try to bridge up or pull them back from the ~6 laps to go mark.
Good workout for me, but I didn't expect that amount of apathy on the part of the field. Break dangled there forever, and then they just disappeared. I was tempted to get into a chase and drive it, but I don't know how that would be viewed by my team, as I'm still semi-new, and I don't know if increasing our odds vs. playing the cards as they were dealt (1 in 3 vs. 2 in ____...preferably 5) would be appreciated or not.

I was wrong. Our team got 2nd out of 109 teams present. Not 50-60 like I thought.
But a lot of the teams were represented by only a rider or two.

Three races this weekend:
Grayslake Crit. Cat 4
Twisty course. Rain. Nice n' smooth. 6 turns. Took turn 3 too aggressive and ended up bunny hopping the curb riding the grass and finishing just off the back. Too bad. I felt good, too.
Glenco Grand Prix, Cat 4/5 masters
Fun race. Someone (usually MS Racing) was off the front the whole race. Constant attacks & counter attacks. Smooth course with only two real turns. I took the first half easy then chased down one break with another guy; then got into a great 4 man break that was scuttled by two MS teammates. One guy I knew was going to win the race, I thought their team would block; we had a xXx racer so I though his team would help block and me (solo). Smart & strong racing by MS. I should have attacked when I saw what they were doing. Headed into turn 1 on the bell lap, I'm sitting 2nd wheel, the winner is on the front (and was for the previous lap too) he turns around and looks back at us, then attacks. Hard. I go and couldn't catch. I hang for like 5 seconds before I realize I'll finish 30th if I don't take this lap smarter. Pull off and get back in 5th wheel. I'm in great position in the final turn and I, once again, have to grab the brakes with less than 200m. I finish 7th, the guy that caused me to brake (didn't hold his line through the turn--not purposeful, just wobbled a bit) hit the podium in 3rd. I raced. I had fun.
Glenco, Cat 4
Oh man this was hard. It was hot, hot, hot. Well not really, but it was the 2nd day it was over 90* all summer. We hit 97*, plus heat index. Hot. I really didn't feel good so I sat in the whole race. Did I mention how crappy I felt? 4 riders break off the front half way through and finish 30 sec ahead of us. Its so hot that not one wanted to chase. I was totally fine with that. I sprinted for 11th. Glad it was over. I took a piss at 10:45 and didn't need to pee again for ~10 hours.

Brentwood P/1/2 was very hard. I went with a couple of decent moves early on but spent most of the race mid-pack or dangling at the back. It was a 1 mile hot dog course with 2 very sharp U-turns. Every turn we came to a near stop then sprinted out of the saddle back up to speed. I did a fast find in WKO+ and found 67 separate 750+ watt spikes. Easily the hardest crit I've been able to finish since I upgraded.

66 miles, 6000 feet of climbing = Tokeneke Classic Cat3 race.
wow, was this a hard race.
Actually hung with the lead group until the final climb, at which point I was put nicely off the back, losing 1:55 in the final 15' to the eventual winner. Not bad!
That said, a very successful race in my book and probably the toughest race I've ever done. The descending was tiring too (neck and triceps!) and there was virtually no flat stuff (which is where a 200 lb. rolleur like myself really excels... ).
Great GMSR training and tons of suffering was had.... not really a "fun" day of racing, but I'm very proud finishing 33rd out of 48 finishers (66 starters). A race of attrition, for sure.
Freaking strong field of 3's too!! chapeau boys!

Ouch. Rotten luck, but glad to hear that nothing is broken.
Last night I raced. I didn't crash and I didn't cause a crash.

I'm glad you're okay. I ran over there with the first aid kit and my heart sank when I saw you on the ground.
I did learn a new rule as stated by MJ, "If you're on the ground for 10 mins and you don't get up, we're calling an ambulance."
Heal fast man.
PS: You probably got a kick out of the fact that Trent took the air out of your tubes at the hospital when we dropped your car off so they wouldn't explode in the heat the next day.
SOC just started laughing when Trent told him that.
