The first ride is always Around the Block. It's an easy 10 mile loop around and over my mountain. I do it from time to time as a fitness test.
The first time is just to remind my body what's coming.

I don't usually get up the last stretch without walking until June. I did
it today on the first ride. Cross training works. The Specialized shims I got deserve a big thumbs up, my knees tracked straight without effort going uphill for the first time in my life.

This is going to be a good year.

Yup.

Took Mrs. Grouch out on the tandem for the first time this year. Tried out her new Brooks saddle. We only rode for around 20 miles but, at the end of that time, she announced that her "bum" wasn't hurting so I'm taking that for a good sign.

I still haven't had the opportunity to try out my new Chris King wheelset. Maybe Friday if the weather's nice.

I did my first commute of the year on Friday. Mind you I had my first ride of the year in Oregon last month, so I'm ahead of both of you.

But did it ever feel good.

I've been out quite a bit this year, but won't call it my "first ride" until I can skip the long pants.

I did my first 2009 ride today too! It was in the 50's (egad! ) and I did wear leg warmers and a jacket, but still was able to do 30 miles at a leisurely pace. Things were a little sloppy with the roads being wet from the snow melt. But it sure beats riding the trainer! :thumb:

Not the first ride, but the first two days in a row of 15-mile rides. Yesterday's involved windy conditions but 60's temps so I was able to appreciate how much more pleasant headwinds are on a recumbent instead of cursing a cold wind. On the return, the tailwind helped me maintain 24-25mph for longer than I am used to.

Key word: Tailwind.
I am even faster downhill.

I love downhills and tailwinds.
