Recumbent - Shopping for a used 'bent for the wife

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. We've ridden several 15 to 20 milers in the past on our uprights and always enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately, due to physical constraints she can't comfortably sit the saddle anymore.

We spent some time last year on our "New To Us" Sun EZ Tandem and she loved it. I've decided (with her blessing) to find her a used recumbent of her own. She's barely 5'3" tall. Again due to her physical constraints we are shopping for a LWB or a CLWB with a low step-over height and a somewhat low seat.

I own a Sun EZ Sport. She has a difficult time stepping over the frame of my EZ Sport and the seat is too high for her to reach the ground properly while seated. Based on the dimensions of that bike: Seat height approx. 28", Frame height approx. 25" and BB height 16"...we're shopping for something a bit lower to the ground by 3 to 4 inches. The BB needs to be lower than the seat height as she has a very difficult (painful) time raising her legs. She needs OSS for her balance issues which rules out the Linear.

I'm leaning towards a Rans Stratus, Sun Tomahawk, Easy Racers Javelin and the Bachetta Bellandare as potential makes and models to look for. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Trying to keep the price below $500 will limit our choice and pretty much rules out the newest models such as the Bellandare, but you never know...if she falls in love with a late model ride....we may just buy it!!

I understand her dilemma perfectly as we must have sprang from the same, physical mold. The key here is proper seat height - which should be no higher than 21" (or about dining room chair height). The Stratus (26/20) or the small, Easy Racer, Tour Easy. To me, the Stratus LE gets the nod because it has a sloping top tube which lowers the seat height when adjusted forward. Both the Sun Tomahawk and Easy Racers Javelin have higher cranks, so doesn't fit the criteria you mentioned. I've not ridden the Bellandare (or know its seat height offhand), so can't comment.

If you don't mind used, then scan these possibilities:

There's a Ran Stratus on eBay right now for what looks like under $500. The guy's 6' tall though, so I don;t know if it's a standard or large frame.

Should be able to find a good ez-1 for under 500 I would think. The lbs here in northwest Illinois has tons of them for near $500.00. They're a lot shorter than the sport and a nice little ride for the money. I have one I'm planning on trading this week to go to a bigger faster bike and I'd be glad to sell it for $500.00. Alas we are too far apart to make the deal feasible. I'm sure you could find one near that price in your area. Happy riding!

I also posted this on BROL. Perfect for short people. In between a lwb and a swb. This one is on the other side of the country, but they do show up on Craigslist fairly often. Check with your Bacchetta dealer too.

My wife and 12 year old daughter are both 5'2". My wife has a regular size Stratus LE that fits her very well. Easy to get both feet down and handles nicely. My daughter rides an older Tailwind and it works great for her. My wife also enjoys riding the Tailwind. The EZ 1 is also a good choice and much easier to find in that price range (although my daughter's Tailwind was only $350). The EZ will be heavier unless you find the aluminum model.

Thank you all for your input. I ended up buying her a Sun X-1. It was over budget but it certainly fits our need. She's had it out a couple oftimes already this season and is adapting quite well to it. Though she's still a bit hesitant to get into crowded areas and is still a bit shaky on sharp turns, she's doing very well.
