Electric Bikes - Schwinn Izip for $349

Canadian Tire is clearing their Schwinn Izips for $349. The sale goes until this thurs so don't wait to long to think about it.

I bought the woman's bike last summer for my wife, and I've been using it for myself. Last night, I bought the men's frame for myself so the wife and I can go for rides together this summer.

Great price... but these bikes is VERY OLD! They've probably been sitting around in a warehouse for years! Currie hasn't produced a Schwinn bike since 2006 (or earlier?). That wouldn't be a problem, except for the fact that lead acid batteries decay rapidly when they sit uncharged. If the batteries aren't dead upon purchase, they're probably not going last very long...


I guess if you bought the bike for $349 and had to replace the batteries, it would still be a good deal. But just be aware, these batteries have been sitting a long time...

I already have 2 sets of lead acid batteries from last August. And, I've built 2 more sets of batteries using the yardworks lithium ion batteries.

By, staying with the schwinn, I gain a 5th battery pack and I have to ability to share the battery packs and chargers between the 2 bikes.

Also, over time, i'll be able to sacrifice 1 bike to keep the other running. Ofcourse, i'll keep ordering replacement parts to repair the bike that is down.

is that a new bike? when I search the walmart.ca site, all I can find is a more expensive model, and it isn't stocked in all stores. Calgary Marborough mall is the only location in this area.

no last years there missing a few screws. still new in the box. there not being sold by walmart. not sure how this guy got them.

What can I say about the Canadian Tire (http://www.canadiantire.ca/) Schwinn bike? Its American designed and will haul a Texan around, but, it sure isn’t a Veloteq! This is however, an electric-assist bike, where I’d call the Veloteq an electric moped/bike.

Is says it comes with a 20A fuse. Would that be enough to use with the current chain drive 24v motors? Maybe two in parallel to split the amperage?

not sure what type of cells thay are. may not take more than 20a draw. i may pick one up to test.

I'm more excited about the battery packs than the bikes. the bikes look like a redesign of the same technology.

I know this thread is about Izip.. but someone mentioned Canadian Tire coming up with brand new ebikes and I wanted to take this opportunity to give it back to Schwinn for the horrendous product they built by making the Schwinn AL1020.

This was my first ebike. I quickly learnt that the best way to go is to build my own and be in full control of which bike frame i'm going to rely on to carry me and the electric gear.

As for the iZip, my friend went out to get one and I tried it. It's loud as hell, because it has an external drive, and it has no shocks, which makes for a stiff ride. Shocks are very important when commuting. Get a bike with front and back shocks and it will make for a more comfy ride and save your components from rattling and eventually failing. If you buy a dual suspension mountian bike for about $100.00 (yes, you can get one at Walmart, it has plastic pedals, which are cheapo as hell, but you can change that later) and get a 36Volt kit (the one I built was a 48volt because I had a streak of vengeance in me after going through the 24Volt disaster of the AL1020) for a total of $600 .. you've got yourself something you can really go places with.

the older izips for $350 is a darn affordable way to get started with ebikes. Personally, i've always wanted a hub motor, but now that I have the Izip, I plan on running this bike into the ground before replacing it., i'll just keep fixing it as long as there are replacement parts

BTW, Karma, I'm shocked to hear that your frame rusted out. In my part of the country, I've seen 30 year old bikes that haven't rusted out.

I'm using the yardworks as 20V 12 Ahr batteries. I guess in a sense, the yardworks are lower cost.

But if the new battery pack comes with the correct power socket, I'd have to admit that it might not be worth the soldering time to build my own battery packs.

i wonder if your welding also sped up the rusting issue

It could be a flux related issue. I don't know the details with mig welding but I can confirm that some fluxes on electronics circuit boards require washing to meet IPC standards. The fluxes don't cause corrosion, but create an envirement that allows corosion to establish itself faster.

how are you putting 4 bats on your bike?

i ran 2 in the orig place last year then returned them and got my cash back....lol
this year i'll run 6 or 8 adding the other 4 or 6 in a triangle frame bag that looks
it will fit in the izip triangle perfect and has a key switch all for like 50 bucks
like you siezetech i was going to spit for a hub but have seen the value of
these bikes and will pick up another one and keep my 4200km one for parts
call it piece of mind having those spare parts
i will leave it as my winter ride as it has studded tires on it already
for 350 i can't resist even though i long for a 5305@100+ volts

I put 2 yws batteries into a schwinn pack, and I've duct tape the other 2 yws batteries so the fit in a rear carrier.

I didn't complete disassemble them, I kept the original cases on them but when I disassembled them to solder the wires into place, I left all the extra/useless plastic parts and aluminum parts off the case.

I have 1 pack that is tripping on me, and it won't recharge. I hope it isn't damaged because I chose not to wire them up with the diodes like the one guy on the endless-sphere website that you posted. Worst case, i'll gut the good cells out of it, figure out what to do with them.

On the new ebike I've seen the connector and it appeared to be the round three prong type usually seen on most ebikes. It is not the same plug, (rectangular three prong), that comes with last year's Schwinn.

I think that is an "XLR" connector. It's common on microphones. It's actually a pretty good choice for an ebike. Where else can you find a relative cheap and strong connector for a few bucks that is proprietary enough to discourage people from plugging into 125V?
