Anyone planning on doing this one in May? I did it last year and had a blast despite the heat.

Next year I hope. I am not ready yet.

You have more than 2 months to get "ready". C'mon! I mean who is ever "ready" to do 200 miles in 1 day. :innocent:

If you can do a hilly century comfortably now, the Davis Double is very realistic in May, as long as you have time to train.

I did my first double at the Davis last year. Did you see the reults online? TONS of DNF. Made me feel pretty cool that I lived through it. Pete even got me in before dark, just like he promised.

I'm going (I think) It's a "Jersey Year" They only do them every so many years. I was soooooo bummed last year there wasn't one to buy. If I like this years at all, I'm GOING.

Here we are at the end. I think we're smiling because we are done riding!

I may consider this if I have someone to ride with -- I don't want to do it alone -- and since I'm not riding the Monticello century (our team is working one of the stops) I can actually do this.

I've done 112 mi. on a tandem. I'm doing Solvang next weekend and the Chico Wildflower century in April.

What training do you do for a double?

I'm doing it. I hope it isn't as hot as last year though.

How much time do you have? It takes me about 7.5 hours to do Foxy's.

I'm signed up for a century on 5/2, and a double on 5/9. Ah, what the hell... back to back doubles it is. :twitchy:

If you know how to HTFU then you should be ok. :p

(I haven't tried yet, let you know how it goes...)

Heh, I could ride to the start. :P

I kind of halfway want to do this, just because it's ridiculous and crazy. Wine Country is two weeks before. I'll have to see how I do on that before I decide.

I check the DBC website several times a day. My resolution for the rest of my cycling career (was made at the end of it last year) is to do the DD every year. This ride should not be missed by anyone who wants the ultimate mental/physical challenge. :thumb:
Oh, I'm sooooooooo in!

Funny that picture of Pete and Curtis... The 3 of us rolled to the finish together and it seemed almost dark... Maybe it was all a hallucination...

Yeah? I think I'll have to pace at 14 or 15mph in order to make it. What kind of training should I do between now and then?

And of course, a week later is the NorCal century. I'd imagine that will be a snap after a double :roflmao2:

I left at 5am, got back at 8ish, and averaged 15mph rolling.
I was careful not to get too excited the first 150 miles.
Training: Ride lots

I commute every day, and tried to do a few centuries before hand. I rode 50-60 miles a lot on weekends.

Maybe there's hope. I'll need to wait and see what the registration fee is. That alone could be a deal breaker.

Curtis, I think I am going to follow your training plan. To that end, can you talk more about your training? For example, is your commute hilly, or is it a flattish long ride that you hammer? What about the long rides on weekends: do you also do them in the hills? Thanks.

haha, dude, you're nuts!

We'll see how I feel after my first two doubles. I really want to do Davis but I have all these other rides scheduled - and I don't want to burn out before summer.

If I recall, the DD is on the cheaper side... less than $50 I believe. Like others have said, ride lots. That is all.

I am a definite in.
This will be my first double also. I think it looks like NorCal BikeForums will "represent" in this one.
We are shaping up as a pretty good squad.

Now, if only registration would open.

Found these on bikely:

The routes are a little different. One says 7200' of climbing and the other says 7400

That doesn't look like an easy climb, especially coming about 100 miles in!

It's all in the presentation. Think about it next time you see a TV graphic explaining anything.

I've done this double a few times. (albeit its been about 5yrs since the last time)
often times they have music at the top, popsicles, and I'm thinking that the music is something like Hawaiian music. that is, something like Polynesian drums... the music can be heard as you're climbing up thru the canyon.

ya, its steep, the upshot is that the road is closed (i think), or there is little to no vehicle traffic, so you can do "paper route", that is, zig zag across the road back and forth.

in the world of Doubles, Davis is probably the most "friendly"
altho, in years past, it has rained, and I distinctly remember doing the first 1/2 in the rain.

the upshot, is that its not too terribly hilly (over all)

taking on a Double is no casual consideration.

there are a bunch of things to keep your mind focused on.

i can remember once, my friends and i formed our own group, and people come and go, which is great, but sometimes, their different rhythms, style (whatever), can break the rhythm of your group.

anyways... there was another group ahead of us, with about 40 miles to go, suddenly their group was sprawled all over the road. a lapse of attention, someone touched wheels, and someone broke their collar bone.

The heat last year was horrendous but the ride support was very good. I seriously cooked in the heat and found the last flat section borderline intolerable. I would like to try it on my recumbent one year.

An engineering professor once told me "Any two points on a graph can be connected with a straight line. And any THREE points on a graph can be connected with a straight line... if you draw it real thick."

Yeah, it was nasty hot last year! I didn't do the DD, but a few friends did. I rode the Monticello Century the next day. At 98 degrees, that was considered cool compared to the day before.
