DON'T DRILL HOLES IN IT. it looks cool, but the miniscule weight savings aren't worth losing the strength

How much are you spending on your parts?

Buy race parts to make it uber light, all the kids will be jealous.

minichamp31

You know what's funny? I didn't really use all racing parts on my bike. My bars, cranks, and wheels could be used on a street/trails bike.

You kids actually do that?

That's stupid. I'm gonna try it on my CF road bike.

not us that only have the cash for one bike. I know this guy at my High School that has an all black WTP with fingernail sized holes all thru the top tube. looks like a freaking gun, but apparently he has to replace his whole frame like 3 times a year. damn those guys whose parents make 100g+ a year each :P

That makes no sense. If a rodie ain't doing it to save weight, it's not worth the time.

That's a good rule of thumb.

You can make your bike weigh nothing by selling it.

Yea but roadies can't do it because it will make them less aerodynamic.

Lots of roadies in the 70s and 80s did the speed holes thing, especially on brake levers, rear derailleur cages, and sometimes chainrings. Never on frames though, that's just a recipe for disaster.

minichamp31

I don't think the few grams of weight you're going to save by doing that is worth it.

Probably not in BMX, no. In that era of road cycling, before the advent of carbon fiber componentry, it was arguably worth it. Since things like derailleurs and brake levers aren't load-bearing, the strength of them doesn't really matter, and those few grams can make a difference when you're going up the side of a mountain.

Even in road cycling it's no longer a popular method of weight reduction, though, since carbon fiber tends to crack and/or break when you put holes in it.

... or when its unpainted & the UV light reaks havoc on the resin & clearcoat .

*sniker*

Theres some F1 teams , using a clear with some CF "sublock" ... I'm sure, you *can* get you hands on some of it . It'll porly cost ya 1,000 $ for a model paint glass jar size.

Street rider

minichamp31

Obviously he's a weight weenie. But the Eclat combo is fine, a seat is a seat.

To keep your bike light don't put brakes on, or grips, or tubes and tires. Ride straight on the rim for a cool weightless status. Who needs a seat anyways?

minichamp31
03-13-09, 07:05 PM
Yeah seats are for wimps.

Street rider
03-13-09, 07:29 PM
its always fun to land hard and have a post go right up the bum... unless you're too cool for a seat post too

minichamp31
03-13-09, 07:42 PM
You don't need one of them either. And if you really want to save weight, drill holes everywhere on your bike, including every weld. That would save a lot of weight.

You can't expect us not to flame you if your going to be a weight weiner.

minichamp31

Don't worry about the weight of your bike. No matter how heavy it is, unless it's a ridiculous amount, you will get used to it quickly. If not, you might have to do some push-ups or lift some weights. No biggy.

03-14-09, 03:01 PM
i dont even know how many weight weenie threads i've posted on saying that my stock bike was like 32 lbs...now its down to 26. dont worry about stock weight cause eventually it'll get lighter. and you'll get used to it too.

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that "George Foreman" can't handle a heavy (not really) bike?
