I live in an apartment and park my car in a public (though locked) garage. I've seen a few people store toolboxes and such in their garage parking spots, and would like to do the same with my bicycle (running out of space in my apartment). Does anyone have any thoughts on how to secure a bicycle in a public garage? Can/should I buy a bike rack or something to lock it to to prevent someone from walking off with it? I'm pretty new to all of this, and it's not a particularly expensive bike (Trek 7.2), so I'm looking for a reasonably secure but not overly expensive solution. Thanks in advance for your help.

It's possible, but I would remove parts to make it less attractive, i.e. remove the seat and post, maybe take the front wheel also. If you have a computer, pump, water bottle, tool kit, definitely remove those also.

I've removed parts and nobody's touched my stuff. I had a friend who would deflate his tires and painted his bike a flat black and added a few ugly stickers.

My 7.2 fx was stolen on thursday. It was in a locked private garage. It had a cable lock. It was snapped. My fixed gear with a u-lock wasn't touched. The thieves took 4 bikes, all had simple cable locks. They only left bikes that had u-locks, chains, or crappy bikes. BUY THE BIGGEST STRONGEST LOCK YOU CAN AFFORD. Think about locking it a with multiple locks, especially your front wheel.
