Long Distance Competition/Ultracycling, Randonneuring and Endurance Cycling - Cue sheet holder -- pictures?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was really annoyed by my cue sheet setup yesterday on a 200k. I'm farsighted so I need fairly large type since I can't stand to wear my glasses while riding. I saw a bent wire contraption that looked pretty good, and a couple of people that had small clip boards. Anyone willing to post a picture of their setup?
Anyone edit the cue sheet? I was thinking about doing that to make the controles line up better with the sheets, but I was afraid to mess anything up.

Our cue sheets come as spreadsheets, easy to edit. I add short comments, like when a road has more than one name, or two roads have similar names. Example; cue sheet says left on Cherry Lake Road, but you first have to pass North Cherry Lake Road, so I add "Not N. Cherry", to save myself a possible wrong turn. I also add a "*", if the next turn is less than 1/2 mile, as it's easy to miss a quick turn.
I suppose you could mess it up, but the benefit should outweigh the risk, if you are careful.

There are fancier approaches, but here's a cheap and relatively easy-to-make route sheet caddy (http://www.veloweb.ca/garagepages/sheetholder.html).
See also: "Rando tackle (http://www.veloweb.ca/randopages/randokit.html)."
As far as route sheets themselves, the ones I issue are very well cued, if I do say so myself.

I have found rando chaps cue sheets to be really well done and virtually idiot proof to read. If you are in the Vancouver island area try and take in a brevet.
I was using binder clips on my set of aero bars to hold my cue sheets and that worked really well. But now I am using an axiom handle bar bag with binder clips attatched to hold my cue sheets. This seems to work well enough.
mine, when I'm not using a front bag:

made from a recycled honjo fender strut and hardware and some plexi. i added some heat shrink tubing to keep the strut from marring my stem. the baggie is an aloksak from the kayak section of the local outdoor gear store.
i really like it when the RBA's issue a spreadsheet a week before the ride. i like editing, adding bold text for turns, etc.
the boston folks tend to issue a pdf file before the ride. works great as they are really good cue builders - but i hate cutting and pasting the pdfs to get them into a format that i like.

i try to edit the controls so they are at the end of a 'flip'. this doesn't always work out with lots of turns and lots of miles between controls... i don't mind flipping my clear envelope over while riding - but i don't like trying to flip the paper (in the rain and dark) while moving.

wow, mike, that's actually rather s****y. do you need to do anything to stabilize it? from the photo it looks like it's just the strut wrapped around your stem

Looks good to me. Doesn't even take up any handlebar room really.

i added a velcro strap to it just behind the computer. on my 300k i ended up fishing out a zip tie in the dark... as i forgot to velcro it down before rolling.
i'm wondering what word got bleeped out in your post above?
since those pics i have removed 2 of the bolt / connection things on the plexi part, and i made up a plate for a larger cue (small or large, i'm covered)

Mike, I like your holder. I think I may try to get away from the clips, those were driving me nuts.
I have been contemplating a bag, but I don't really have a bike that would be happy with a handlebar bag right now.
I have been rather surprised at how little support is really needed. I saw a number of people that just had their cue sheets clipped to their brifter gear cables. My bike was described as being a "lugged steel bike with downtube shifters" so I didn't have anything like that to clip it to.

I was thinking "sturdy", but apparently that one's OK.

I usually enter the brevet into bikely.com, move the cue sheet into a word processor, and massage as necessary.
BTW, it's dangerous to ride without glasses. Those rock clicks on my glasses would have been rocks in my eyes. That's the reason that bike glasses are polycarbonate. If you use glasses, you can stick Optx lenses on them:

The real deal.

the bar map works OK when i mounted it on my aerobars (no more aero for me!) - but when stem mounted i would keep hitting my knees on it when climbing.

Just two rollers, tape the sheet to the rollers (so it's like a scroll), wind knobs for both directions. I plan on adding a little pointer mark just to clarify what cue I'm on.

very nice. waterproof?
i've thought about something similar - but in a tube of clear acrylic to keep the water out....

I don't generally need route sheets for our rides, but if your farsighted I'd recomment bifocal safety glasses. These are a)very inexpensive, b)provide UV protection, c)seem to have very good optical properties, d)come in a range of diopters and e)offer both clear and tinted lenses. I wear glear glasses on overcast days and tinted glasses on sunny days. I need to bifocal insert to make my cyclometer more readable. I shop at safetyglassesusa.com, but there are many web merchandisers for safety eyewear and related products.

The roll chart holder is pretty cool. But you need to have the route sheet printed on a roll chart. That won't work on rides where they won't hand out the route sheet before the ride.
I use these: http://www.cueclip.com/
They work ok. I can flip the folded sheet to the next section as I ride.
The one problem with the cueclip is that it doesn't stick very well to the stem, so it can slide down or rotate. I put some electrical tape on it to make it less slick.

pchopper,
May I ask where you got it from? I'm also in need of something similar for a couple of centuries I'll be doing next sept and oct.
Thanks,

Ihsan,
I made it, it's pretty crude but with some refinements it could work better. Right now I just use shims to "tension" the rollers, this is definately just a prototype :D. When I have time I'll try to find a way to make it waterproof find better mounting options.

To hold the cue sheet, I have two of the www.thecueclip.com, on the handlebars, one on each side of the stem. Our cue sheets are nicely setup so that you fold it longitudinally and then horizontally to show the "current" set of cues. I used to reformat to larger font, but then just started buying bifocal safety glasses, in clear for night riding and tinted for day riding, e.g. www.safetyglasses.com and search on bifocal sunglasses.
On important rides, I'll print the cue sheet on National Geographic Adventure Paper http://www.rei.com/product/684961

Wow! That looks like a ready-to-market prototype to me ;):innocent:..... Please let me know when it's ready to be marketed so I can buy one.

I can't stand to wear glasses because I sweat on them. I suppose if I wasn't so lazy there would be something I could do about that.
pchopper, I've been thinking about doing something like what you have there, but it seemed too complicated. Now that I've seen your holder I think I could probably fab one up.
