so like i've said before i'm new to the fixie thing. I've been riding about 2 weeks now, having a great time and learning as i go.

i posted here about a week ago about how to skid. you're advice worked. i started to figure it out.

then about the 3rd time i got the skid right, it felt like my pedals stopped by my wheel didn't. i thought maybe i was just confused to the new sensation of fixed riding, so i kept trying it out.. then it would feel like i was skidding the tire when i would start from a stop.. very odd. something didn't seem right.

then one more skid and i found the problem.. something popped off my rear hub. a little ring. now the hub is essentially broken. if i walk the bike, the pedals turn with the wheel, but the slightest resistance to the pedals and the rear wheel will spin freely.

i think there could be a couple of reasons.. one, it coulda been a defective hub

two. this one is more likely. i got a flat tire about a week ago, so i took the tire off and patched it up. i hadn't really rode the bike since then, because i was bogged with work. so this was the first time riding it since i put the wheel back on. is it possible i put the wheel to far back and made the chain tension to strong? then the torque would be too much for the hub?

give me some opinions. i was careful about the tension.. i thought it was good. i guess i'll just ahve to flip it over and ride the freewheel until i get it fixed

is the 'little ring' around the axle, to the outside of the cog? If so, thats the lockring, and could certainly explain a slipping cog.

or you couldve stripped the threads.

or both.

Yes, yes, and yes. Is this a track hub, or a converted road wheel?

Sounds like stripped threads to me. No hope I'm affraid, unless it's a flip-flop (threads on both sides). Get yourself a Suzue Promax or NJS (not a Basic), Phil Wood, Paul, Surly, or some other good-quality hub. And make sure you tighten the cog and lockring properly: first, loads of grease and all threads and contact surfaces (both sides of the cog basically). Get your chainwhip, tighten down that cog as hard as you can. Then, preferably using a proper lockring spanner, tighten the lockring, in the opposite direction, ONTO THE SPROCKET. Don't just wrench on it holding the wheel, wrench on it whilst wrenching on the chainwhip in the other direction. This way they're as tight as they can be to each other, and the cog is as tight to the hub as it can be, so basically, it ain't gonna move. Do it right and you'll never strip a hub, even a cheap one.

Here endeth the lesson :)

that reminds me...i should check my lockrings and cogs...not that i have reason to believe they might've come loose...just more of a paranoid maintenance thing. i've had the same cogs and lockrings on both of my bikes for over a year now. they're probably fine...

holy crap my typing has gone down the tubes!! i just had to fix so many mistakes!

well, an actual ring came off, so i'm assuming that's the lockring. maybe i stripped them too.. it's a flip flop hub, so i can turn it over for now to ride around. but i want to fix it ASAP. fixed is too much fun. a kid across the river built it for me and said to contact him if anything needed fixing, so i'm hoping he can replace it for me.

good one. wish i read it a while back when i switched sprockets for the first time and was tryin to loosen the lockring in the wrong direction. i finally figured it out .... i should check to see if its still tight. i bet i didnt use enough grease too.
