Mountain Biking - MTB an Olympic event

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hey I was just wondering if there were any mountain biking events at the Olympics? What other cycling events are there? Is there a road race? I bet if you could fly really high over Athens right now it woiuld look like a giant anthill because they apparently are not ready. Hope they get it together. AS a side note anyone following the NHL playoffs. How about those Flames.

Yea, it was declared an olympic sport in 1996 I believe.

Only xc...
Yeah for the flames :D
I've actually ridden the olympic mountain bike course from 1996 just outside of Atlanta, GA. Oddly enough, somebody who posts here (Samdabikinman) was my trail guide that day! I'm hoping to get up that way again this summer... definitely one of my favorite trails, albeit a lung buster.
yeah mtb is an olympic sport, but not as popular as some other sports ie athletics, swimming

I had no idea that it was an olympic sport until my friend told me. Yeah definately the flames are suprising this year but the Flyers are gonna win it all.

L8R :D As if I need to explain my position
<snip>but the Flyers are gonna win it all. Keep dreaming. Ken Hitchcock is too busy flapping his chins at a player who isn't on his team (and hasn't been since Dallas) and whining about fan reactions to a dirty Brashear hit to worry about coaching the Silly Cryers

Don't trust me on this, but I heard a rumor, can't even remember where, but DH is being proposed to be an olympic sport.
How do you think the world discovered Paolo Pezzo

I have heard a more expanded version. But that is the same rumour I heard

I heard a rumor that they were going to cut down on the number of sports like fencing and tennis. Why would they add another event? Or maybe....they're making space for a DH event :D

They are cutting back on sports not getting viewers. They are always considering adding other sports that might get the younger viewers to appreciate the olympics again. At least thats how I took the press conference they did when they explained why they were considering releasing some sports.
Sports like Tennis also have a funny irony. I doubt there are many Tennis players who put much credence in the Olympics offering the most competition. The grand Daddy of tennis will NEVER be the olympics, kind of the opposite of what the olympics should be :)

good call, the "olympics" of tennis is like wimbeldon (i dont think i spelled it right but you know what i mean)
anyway, it would be freakin sweet if DH was an olympic sport but i dont think that the "older" athlets and fans would aprove, because mountain biking, and espesially DH, is considered to be "the bastard offspring of cycling" which is kind of funny and awsome at the same time. but anyway the older, more "traditional olympians" would probably protest and make a big deal out of it so we may not see DH in the olympics till much, much, later down the road.

That second paragraph is exactly why I hate the olympic (excluding winter which seems to be run by younger more in tune people)...the olympics blow...but I guess thats why the x-games will keep getting more popular though...so it isn't all bad the olympics are run by a bunch of old guys :)
The olympics of Tennis would be all 4 in reality...but for history sake...yes winbledon is the grand daddy...you could win just that tournment and be remembered forever with the fans :)
if anything, DH should be an X-Games sport...if it...already isnt...ive be a little behind with the X-Games in the past few years.

it was in the xgames...as a dh 'snow' event to make it more interesting...
now instead they do dhbmx which is...well...dumb. oh well...dh is its own sport...:D
What's DHBMX, is it like a normal BMX track, but steeper? Or is it more like a mountainbike DH course?
Also the snow DH is more like 4x, it's really good to watch though.

Isn't this already in the X-Games?????
The olympics has WAAAAAAAAAAY to many sports. If we wanna add downhill, we should just have venues with nice downhill sections. The riders will have to chug themselves UPHILL. No ski lifts!!!!!

DH? In the X Games? I don't think so. IMO there should be more X Games type sports in the Olympics and less tennis. (Tennis is boring as hell) And some X Games stuff should not be in the X Games. Surfing comes to mind. BORING. As for the X Games anyone else see the Body Varial!??!!?!!?! That was crazy. How about Mirras Double tailwhip or the Tailwhip Flare?

I think Mountain Biking is a lot more interesting than watching 8 different divisions of guys with funny helmets cycling around a 300 meter oval track. I daresay that watching trail running would also be more interesting than watching guys run around the same featureless track over and over again.
Of course, the same challenge is creating a course that is interesting AND accessible to spectators.

Fox...surfing is a core sport. One of the original 'extreme' sports. To remove a sport like that would be ... ignorant. Almost every board sport is here because of boring surfing (which is not boring...the flow and skill required are just awesome)...
I won't get to see the xgames for another month or so I bet...we usually don't get them till they are done (except the year it was here)...personally the only thing I hate about the xgames is inline...I really can't stand inline...
Do they have aireal surfing in the X-games? that is a sick sport. In the all the surfing world cup events they have an expression session where all the surfers do aireals, they get hell air and can do some pretty cool stuff in the air.

Backflips bore me...to death. To many people doing them in every sport...flipwhips are cool...but in either case I have a deep appreciation for surfing. IT goes beyond most of the sports you are talking about. Playing in a sport that started them all (skate, longboard, inline etc...)...you can't get much more core than that (talk about sounding like a hippie)...

The irony is...on a playing level....board sports suck. I can't feel them. Surfing, wakeboard, skateboarding, longboarding or snowboarding...I suck...badly.
