Are they any good?
Are they crap?

I'm looking at some second-hand ones with a steel, threaded, one inch steerer for about $100

Well, they go for ~$130 new so $100 sounds a bit high for used. I have a Profile BDC on my tri-bike. A bit on the heavy side compared to other similar forks but it is stiff and absorbs road vibration well.

Gonzo Bob, is the BDC stiff enough laterally for sprinting out of the saddle?

I imagine it would be. But as I said, it's on my tri-bike and as triathlon does not involve sprinting, I have never sprinted on that bike.
