I need to pick up a vacuum cleaner for the folks' place that actually works.
What do y'all have and was it worth the money?

Many thanks,

We picked ours out based on consumer reports, and we're happy w/ it. It's from Sears, a rolling canister thingy.

Can't go wrong with a Kirby. It will last forever.

I did some good research the last time I bought a new vacuum cleaner (about 1 1/2 years ago). I found many places that said it wasn't worth getting the really high end stuff.

Any way, the short version of the story is that I got a Sears upright vacuum and have been very happy.

Model: Kenmore Inteli-Clean 116-35922500

These look like the closest ones to mine (probably just this year's version of same model)
*This first if 35922 model like mine

I use a shop vac with a wand on it. If you take your time, it works pretty well. ;)

My Dyson Animal DC17 is the bees knees for picking up the dog and cat fur. And I like the convenience of bagless as well.

I bought it to replace an older Hoover WindTunnel for which I could no longer easily find parts. As a test, I vacuumed the downstairs with the Hoover fitted with a new bag. I then went over the same area with the new Dyson. I was flabbergasted as to how much stuff the Dyson pulled up out of the carpet that was left behind by the Hoover.

We got a 69.99 target special, and it works fine. Better than the old canister it replaced. I guess it depends on what you consider "good." At this point so many consumer goods are basically disposable, it's sickening.

You should use a blowtorch (http://www.theolympian.com/southsound/story/438557.html)for that. Also bagless.

My wife cleans houses for a living and uses Dirt Devil Vision vacuums.

There are better units out there, but these (yes, she has more than one) are light enough for her to haul up stairs. They are also easy to maintain since the filter can be blown out with an air compressor.

IMO, that's the key to keeping any vacuum working well: keeping it cleaned out.

I read that story, and I was astonished that alcohol was not involved.

It may have been an oversight by the reporter.

I bought a Kirby couple years ago. It's the best performing vacuum cleaner on the market. Sucks up stuff that all other vacuums leave behind (actual documented testing). Takes me less time to clean the house than previous units as a result. AND, it'll last longer than anything else I've had as well. Previous vacuum lasted 10-years, but the last 5, it wasn't working too well with worn-out brushes. I like that the Kirby has replaceable parts. Just wished they used more modern technology like moulded carbon-fibre casing instead of chrome-plated steel; it's way too heavy! :(

But they are self-propelled. :D

Since I don't have stairs I don't know how well the Kirby handles on stairs.

I've never tried a Kirby but the people I've known who had them swear by them. The consensus was they were really pricey initial investment but reliable and more importantly, they actually perform the function they were intended for. Which is more than I can say for most Hoovers I've owned.

I just used a Bissell to clean an apartment last week and found it pretty good. We have a Dyson at work and while it has lots of admirable attempts to reinvent the vacuum cleaner it's not very user friendly.

dyson vacuum is so pricey... $700 CAD at costco... how much does it cost in the US?

Ditto, word for word. You can't get them for less than $550 (well, we used a 10% Target coupon) and easily worth the spend if you have animals. Never chokes on pet hair. If I didn't have pets I'd buy a cheaper Dyson model than the Animal.

Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary Edition or the Eureka Smart Boss 4870 are the consumer reports recommended upright vacuums under $200, FWIW.

Sears canister. It works well, it's light, quieter than many other models, and it's really well designed.

We picked up one of the low end dyson's for around $300 and it works much better than the hoover we had. Used to have a rainbow and it cleaned really well but with kids you have vacume nearly every day and filling and leaning the water tank on the rainbow was a pain.

I'll have to say a dirt-devil canister style is completely inadequate for picking up hair.
the carpet brush axle snapped in half because of the hair build up.

I, too, did the Consumer Reports thing - Kenmore Inti-clean was what I chose, and I'm very happy with it.
