Foo - iTunes alternative?

Does anybody have a good suggestion for an iTune alternative? iTunes is a resource hog and scam for their store.t

For just playing music? I still like the old standard: Winamp Lite. Version 2.9 or so is really lightweight, but missing a few playlist features some people seem to insist on. It's also harder to find. Version 5 is a little bigger, but still makes iTunes look like pregnant sow in comparison. Winamp has no music store integration, but good filetype support.

I like to use VLC player (http://videolan.org). Also plays videos of all types without installing codec-packs that corrupt your system. And it streams it to my HDTV across wireless as well. :)

I agree with Danno. VLC is fantastic.

A friend of mine uses Foobar, and is more of a music buff than me...

I got the Zune software because I got a Zune, before that I used Winamp. -shrug- It all plays music, and was less of a pain than iTunes was.

I forget to mention for iPod transfer, not for music playing. I heard about Songbird, I'll give that a try. Any other suggestion?

I installed foobar and am stuck at the point of the learning curve where it found and organized all my files but it won't play them. Well, it will play them if I assemble them into a list in another pane. But right now that's another step too far. I might overcome that inertia, and if I do it certainly looks very promising.

I always loved Winamp, but left when AOL took over. I recently (just last week) found a new player that is very reminicient of the old Winamp. In fact, I believe it started with the last code base before AOL took over or something.

So far I really like it except for one feature its missing that I like...it doesn't have a 'slim' mode. It does have one feature that I love that most other players I've ever tried do not have....if you have a playlist open and close the player down. Next time you come back it will remember where you were in the playlist.

I'm not sure if its changed much...but I tried Foobar2000 a few years ago (3 or 4 maybe) and didn't like it at all. It was a weird interface and IIRC crashed often. This was when it was being suggested to me by a few zealots who thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
