Do the skewer springs do anything? When I transport my bike I remove the skewers from the front wheel so I can easily get the wheel in a bag. I have lost one and am getting ready to throw away the other.
All I can see they do is keep the end caps pushed away so it might be a bit easier to insert the wheel back in the fork.

Keeps the skewer centered in the axle for easier wheel insertion.

Ahh...no wonder why my kryptonite skewers pissed me off so much...I was havving horrible rear wheel alignment issues for some time..then i found the right angle to cock the wheel while closing the skewer...I just thought the kryptonites might have been slightly askew....guess I just had to use springs :)
