Hi All,

I'm new in this forum. So perhaps my questions will be idiot but I tried to find responses to them by browsing/ searching with no success. Well I restored a Benetto from scratch this winter (winter is long
here in Canada...) with no problem (I ride it now every days) then I bough a Peugeot for continuing to
play but everything goes wrong with it... the frame get a Peugeot headbadge, the fork says super vitus
the drop out are simplex and the head set is stronlight the rear spacing is 126 mm and the BB is (68) BSC (not french) thread. I have three problem with the frame.

1 - The shifter bosses brazed on the frame are "strange" they are perfectly cylindrical (no flat at the end) and as the hole in the left one is ok for campy and shimano shifter the hole in the right one is widder then nothing fir in it. So any idea ?.... Simplex ? Huret ?

2 - For the BB the thread on the adjustable cup side is to short then the cup end on the threads end before the balls, I have tried with a shimano 600 the spindel is 68x116.

3 - There is a little threaded hole in the seat tube at the place of the front derailleur what type of derailleur use this type of fixation ???

So any clue will be appreciated I just want to figure out what type of group was mounted on this frame.

Thanks so much.

PS : The funniest thing is that I'm french... But you perhaps already gessed it... My english is terible..

2-- I'm guessing you're trying to fit a Japanese spindle into an old French bottom bracket. This can cause problems, as some older french cups were thin walled. Sometimes, not always, you can switch out the adjustable cup for a thicker-walled one and this will work. Otherwise, go to your LBS and get an Italian length spindle for JIS cranks. If you look at the spindle you are using, it is likely marked with a "3"; the one you want should be marked with a "5".

1- Not being able to see your bike, I'm unsure of the problem with the bosses. I have a Vitus Peugeot from 1979, and it came with Simplex shifters, however.

3- Again, I'd need to see the bike.

Having never seen a factory-built Peugeot with anything but Simplex derailleurs and shifters, I am guessing that your front derailleur threaded hole and downtube shift lever bosses are both configured for Simplex. Perhaps an indexed Simplex downtube shifter takes a larger diameter mounting boss than the (friction) left side shifter.

John, did Simplex ever make an indexed shifting system? I've never seen one, but am curious. I'm aware they were eventually bought out or merged with another company, but I've never seen simplex badged index shifters.

Wow !

Thanks so so much, it seems that there is a really serious bunch of vintage bikes fans...

For the BB thanks to poquenahone we try with my guru (an Italian) at my LBS with a
70x116 it's perfect and the chain line is ok for the 6 speeds.

It seems that everybody gess for simplex... Have somebody ever mesure the OD of the screw
that fix a right hand simplex shifter ?

I will try to post photos.

One more time thanks so much.
