"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Doping in the amateur peloton II

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Any updates on this? I'd be more surprised to learn it's not going at all on than to find that it is (although I'm sure it's not too common and rather sporadic). What's the buzz on this on the Web/confessions of amateur dopers? Does the USCF do much dope testing, even at the nationals?
I confess, I've been drinking green tea every now and then.
I've also been taking EPO* to train.

Its cheap, available, and nobody ever gets tested except for nationals. This isnt a poor mans sport so I bet its being used a lot.

You easily could apply this maxim to all of BF, all bicycle racing, and all cycling in general.

Maybe I'm being naive but I just don't see it in the Masters SCal peloton. I'm racing 45+ or 50+ and the guys that are killing it have resumes a mile long w multiple national and district championships to their names, and an occasional amateur world championship. I also train with a few of the top guys and know them and they ride clean. Can't speak for the younger elite types but in Masters racing scene her locally I just don't see it.

There's a lot of dope in the collegiate peloton, but I don't think it's the kind you're referring to.

You'd think if there was much going on, you'd at least hear rumors. But nope, nada, no accusations, not even here in TX where Mexico's pharmacias are just a weekend trip away.
i used to pop actifed, or something like that, back in the day. happy?

there is definately some doping going on in the more serious cat1 racing.. quite a bit from what I've heard from a classmate on an all cat1 team..

I bet there's quite a bit of funny business going on in the more competitive areas of the country. Texas, New York, CA, etc would all be good bets. Hell, people take 'roids for cosmetic purposes, you think they aren't going to do it for competitive ones? I don't care if it's CAT 1,2,3 or just for bragging rights at the weekend Hammerfest. Some guys just can't help themselves.
For $400 and 2 minutes with Google you can get the proper steroid/hormonal stack for cyclist, triathletes and marathoners delivered to your door. You can bet your ass that it'll make a big difference in your performance. Have I done it? No. Did I check it out just to see how tough it was to find? Yes. Easy-peasy-japanesy....
You're kidding yourself if you think all your competitors are clean, but you'll drive yourself nuts if you worry about it.

Before cycling, I ran. In the late 90's I went into GNC to ask about something to make me run better. They gave me 'Awesome Orange' or something with a name kinda like that. It was basically an ephendrine/caffeine mix. My loop that I ran by myself (i.e. no competition at all) was around 4 miles. Doing back to back tests, taking a dose of that drink was worth about a mile a minute. I did the test probably 10 times and it repeated over and over. It was unbelieveable. I felt like I was running with someone else's lungs.
Of course, then people started having heart attacks with that mix, so I put the ki-bosh on it. The last time I saw the carton of that stuff was during a move and it was still 1/2 full. I guess I threw it out, because I haven't seen it in forever.

I dose up with ibuprofen before every ride. Just one tablet. Don't want the drug test to false positive me on anything.
... taking a dose of that drink was worth about a mile a minute. ....
A mile a minute! Thats faster than a speeding train.

how much would epo really help for crits? It seems like it's a climbers/TT drug and unless you're in a breakaway It doesn't seem like sprinters would go for it.

i am not sure anyone will ever remember this one but i use to get 'Turbo Charge' from E-Caps back in the day. It was ephidrine with caffeine mixed. you could take 1/2 of a pill and your nose would run and your heart thump hard. if you were crazy for the win then you would pop a whole pill. me a buddy took 2 years to polish off one 100 capsule bottle. we started to hear about people dying so we kinda called it quits with this stuff.
i think athletes in general will look for any tool possible to win. some will turn to drugs ... so what. i am sure suffering a heart attack and potentially dying is not worth a win at any level of the sport.

Well, the next question is, if I personally need EPO just to be standard 35+ pack fodder, is it worth it?
This is less about anybody else doping in the amateur ranks than my own closet desire to do so. Of course I'll never take anything stronger than Optygen and Advil. Sigh.

The Masters 35+ and 45+ has illegal doping going on (test, epo etc...), not just the younger guys.

There was a guy I raced against last year in a masters race who got busted on a drug control in Europe. It was written up here.

My take on it? Meh. I'm out to have a good time, not stroke my ego. Odds are pretty good I'm not winning my next race, but if you feel the need to dope to beat me, that's fine. I'll just continue to race clean.
I know lots of dopes in the amateur peloton.

I think that's a moral dilemma each person needs to answer for their self.
For me, my answer is no, it's not worth it. But it may be for you. Only you can decide that.

Totally off topic, but thanks for posting the link to Gaimon's blog. He's a funny guy. He mentions "some old dude" bringing him back in a race a few weeks ago...probably Kent Lofton, who's still racing Pro-1-2 at 50 years young.
Back to the topic: Kent's preferred performance enhancer is tuna and crackers. The guy eats less than my cat.

I'm trying to figure out how the F to pay my taxes for 2008, so EPO is not in the Pcad budget. In fact we may have to suspend the Optygen shipments soon, and that's only $49/bottle.

But g, all of bicycle racing is a waste of money for me. On the other hand, can anything that provides me with so much entertainment, fun, suffering and Self Loathing ever be considered a waste of money?
Of course. It's complicated.

Kent's an animal. So is Phil.
Phil showed up at the Tuesday night worlds with a set of S60's on his bike. I mean he's a pro who just got back from racing in the tour of California, he's already got a huge advantage -- he doesn't need fancy wheels to beat us all into little lumps.
Supposedly the sponsors want him to use the S60's as his training wheels. Aieee, I have a feeling we're going to have a lot of fun on our training rides, thankfully Gutt's out of town right now.
Shoot, I need a sponsor. Aside from Sandy's Cookie Company(tm)[1], that is.
