I've been spending my weekend bicycle time repairing/upgrading the components on my trusty 1998 Klein Pulse Race instead of riding. And now I'm sitting at work wondering if I've made a silly error instead of working.

The current issue (which has me ready to throw up my hands and capitulate to the bike shop) is as follows:

1. I've upgraded the fork from the original 1998 Manitou Spyder to a Marzocchi Corsa World Cup SL.

2. My brakes are 1998 Shimano M600 V-brakes (STX-RC or Deore LX level).

3. I remounted a brake on the rear.

4. I went to mount the brake on the fork and found that the fixing bolt is too large to fit into the bosses that are provided with the fork.

Since I'm at work and don't have the bike in front of me - is it possible that I mounted the front brake on the rear? Or has there been a change in the size of fixing bolts for Shimano V-brakes since 1998, meaning I need to purchase new brakes?

Thoughts appreciated.

if the fixing is too large to fix into the bosses you can try going to your lbs and see if they have a pair than will or try a hardware store. another thought will be switch the bosses between the two forks , since they did fit them. last I knew they are all the same size.

AFAIK, all canti pivot bolts are the same size and threading.

Perhaps you inadvertantly unscrewed the whole brake boss from the fork - not just the bolt from the boss. Brake bosses are often screwed in and sometimes unscrew when you try to remove the bolt. And I don't think there is a standard size for the threads where brake bosses attach to forks and frames.

You, sir, get a gold star. Was both thrilled and sheepish when I backed the fixing bolt out of the boss which had, indeed, remained attached.

I made the same mistake just last year on a fork that had not seen any maintenance in a "while". Frustration followed by revelation followed by beer.
