General Cycling Discussion - oh my god this is a death trap!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Oh the humanity.
Pity the poor fool.
In the picture, the bike is being laughed at by Disney gargoyles. It can't get much lower than that.
Wow! And I thought the JATO attached to the old Chevy took the cake for stupidity. Can we nominate the owner of that bike for the Darwin Awards?
Forget Darwin, he's SELLING those things. He has em mounted on dahon foldies, recumbents, etc, check out the site, it's insane.

from the website - Street legal cruising up to 30 MPH by Federal standards. Faster off-road "speed limits do not apply" systems are available.
Faster than 30 off-road... :roflmao: That would be interesting to see on a mongoose.

uh.. isn't this what we have scooters and mopeds for?

Once you get that heavy toy store bike up to 30MPH, how are you going to stop? Those cheap V-Brakes don't work at hight speed. I know. My department store bike is dangerous after 10MPH and you're going to do 30?? I wonder if they include a crash helmet with the bike?

I'll race you to McDonald's.

At 30MPH, the whole contraption has the structural integrity of a toothpick house. When the whole motor assembly shakes loose and falls into the rear wheel, it'll stop quick enough.

all right i'll come clean - i had been interested in getting something like this (the mountable motor) a few years ago. this was before i started getting into real bicycling. as silly as it seems to me now, i was pretty close to buying one :o
I had one once - it was labled a MOPED. Puch, circa 1979.

That's what I was thinking. What's the point on getting a bike with rear suspension and then effectively disabling it? What a nob.

About three years ago, my friend and I made something alot like that. We took a lawnmower engine and mounted it in the middle of a beat-to-hell bike. Then, we made a "clutch" system using three pulleys, one of which was spring-loaded and was controlled with a foot pedal.
According to the el-cheapo bike computer, we got our "Bikocycle" up to 45 MPH on a straightaway. Not only is that a scary-ass speed on anything without four wheels, but this thing would have enough torque to lift the front wheel. However, the engine died on us, as lawnmower engines rely on a splash lubrication system, and with the engine turned sideways, the piston and crank were not receiving sufficient oil.
A damn shame, as I was just about to turbocharge the thing with a Saab turbocharger and a wastegate that was controlled with a rotating switch. In all honesty, I think it was for the best that we didn't get around to adding forced-induction to our mechanical monstrosity. I've got the feeling that the detonation created by an overboost condition/lack of fuel would put shrapnel in rather delicate areas.

Good story. It's a good thing you never found this (http://www.unitednuclear.com/jetplans.htm) site at the time.

I think I'd rather ride this in style (electric assist hub) if I needed an extra push to get around:
