I raced a couple mtb races way back in the 80s so I'm thinking things have changed, so to get some perspective I was wondering if any mtb racers here also race cyclocross (which I did last year) and could give me a little comparison btwn the two, like if fitness level needs to be higher, how accessible racing is, stuff like that. I'm talking xc type racing.

Also, where's the best place to go for mtb race schedules? USAC? Specifically in s. cal.

MTB XC is similar to Cross, in that it is a lot of suffering with not much reprieve. Also, strong technical skills are crucial and an ability to climb well. I race the Ametuer cup series back in the 80's up in Big Bear...good times.
