Southeast - Raleigh NC Bikers

Tell me where your favorite place to ride is? I usually go down Hillsborough heading downtown then ride around Moore square and some of the streets around there. Then coming back I ride through campus and scare people (not really). But I'm just looking for more places to ride, so let me know whats good!

anything outside of downtown proper. i'm in the clayton area.

The Clayton area, as mentioned by wolfpack, is near ideal for cycling. Roads in good condition, traffic is generally light, considerate and its mostly flat terrain. Well into the NW sector, the area in and around Mt. Tirzah and Moriah is also near ideal for cycling. Its primarily rolling picturesque farmland and light traffic. The Southwest sector around Jordan Lake is nice, though traffic seems less considerate here. Whatever, as mentioned above, get out of town. That's the key to enjoyable riding around this metro area.

ok, the area around Jordan lake sounds tantalizing. I'll have to try the Clayton area too.

Raleigh has about 60 miles of paved trails, the longest being along Crabtree Creek. Umstead park connects a fairly long section of trails starting at the Meredith campus and extending past Lake Crabtree in Cary. The Jordan Lake area is very popular for road riders and NC Bike Route 1 will take you all the way to Sanford. Downtown Raleigh isn't bad in non-peak times, especially if you stay off the main streets. I commute to downtown from the Art Museum area by using the House Creek Greenway and then staying a block or so off of Hillsborough St. It's a convoluted route, but senic and mostly quiet.

Riding inside the beltline isn't bad at all, there are plenty of side and secondary streets that can get you around.

I am in the cary/apex/morrisville area. Any local rides you would recommend? I am rather new to riding so something in the 20 mile range at 12-14 mph would be ideal.

The Slow Spokes group is a good group to get connected with. I'm definitely on the competitive end of riding, but have heard great things about the Slow Spokes group... riders of all abilities with a concentration on the recreational, noncompetitive (except friendly bragging rights) side of the sport. Also connect to trianglecycling.com for a local BB that lists rides and meetups several times a week. With the warmer weather here/just around the corner, regular weekly rides will start popping up and becoming more heavily attended.
