I spent (wasted) some time yesterday playing Oregon Trail. I lost my wife to a snack bite, my youngest to cholera, 2 of my oxen were stolen, and I had a fire in my wagon. But I made it to Oregon!

 Well it took a while and some incredible luck to get it. :) Some other people have gotten some ridiculous scores...
Ok,
I got a computer largely just to play Doom. Oh the internet sounded cool, and I really wanted to try flight sims.... but what got the wallet out of my pants was Doom.
I bought the first real 3D video card. It came with Mechwarrior 2. The Mechwarrior series has always had problems with the interface, but the
Mechwarrior Universe got under my skin like nothing else. I hope someday somebody puts out another Mechwarrior game.
Warbirds let me do something I'd always wanted to do, dogfight. I had a ball playing that for 4 or 5 years. Lag issues eventually drove me nuts, but it's still a
great game.
Halflife was the next big step in shooters, and in terms of AI, there really hasn't
been any progress past that I'm aware of. The first time I encountered a group of Marines, I was sneaking up on them, could hear them talking. They just sounded like regular guys. When I got too close they started shooting, and I felt reluctant
to shoot guys like me and ran away. I got over it, but it was what you might call the next step forward in immersiveness.
And speaking of immersivess, there has never been a computer game environment like Crysis. Leaves bend as you brush by, dappled sunlight
plays across the forest, gentle ocean breezes. Winter is long and cold in Maine,
and I spent a lot of time playing just for the illusion of being on a semitropical island.
Total Annihalation gets an honorable mention for perhaps the funnest strategy game ever.

Mechwarrior 2 was awesome. Half-Life was awesome. Total Annihilation was awesome. Got them all. :D
Crysis is pretty cool but even today it still takes a monster computer setup to play it decently...
Supreme Commander is the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation and is pretty excellent. You still need a pretty powerful computer to play it smoothly when there are a ton of units on the map...
Mechwarrior 3 and 4 are pretty good but they don't quite caputre the essense of Mechwarrior 2. MW3 kept the classic battlemech customization setup while MW4 simplified it a bit too much for my tastes (though it did make sense to not be able to load a class 20 autocannon into a missle pod). :D The laser weapons in MW4 just didn't feel right though...
