Campy tapers are different than Shimano or other tapers. Part of the wonderful world of parts incompatibility. I once ruined a Shimano crank arm by trying to run it on a Campy taper b/b. It cracked the bottom bracket end of the crank arm from being forced on to the taper. I then learned of the incompatibility issue after the fact.

campy, stronglight(not old 5pins), TA, miche and some other european brands use iso taper witch is smaller than JIS, used by shimano, sugino, and suntour. you can ruin your cranks by running different conbinations, and also it makes difficult to get right chainline, since engagement of crank to bb axle changes.
so better get the right set.

The crankset/BB cross-branding that has always worked for me is Campy cranks with any brand of JIS BB.

Another data point...my square taper Campy athena crank wouldn't fit on a Shimano BB, it was all loose. Wound up having to get a Campy BB.

As far as I know, Campy and Shimano use the same 2 degree taper for a bb. The spindle cross section is different though, 12.7mm for Campy, 12.9mm for almost everyone else.
That being said, I have used Campy cranks on a Shimano bb for some time without problem.

It sounds to me like folks are saying you can run Campy cranks on JIS BBs and other folks are saying you cannot run JIS type cranks on Campy BBs. I was just about to mount JIS cranks (Cook Bros) on a campy BB. Good timing.

Well, I got a new campy BB and it worked fine. Go figure.

So annoyed, I know i read somewhere that one way is ok, but the other isn't, but I can't for the life of me remember which way, or where I read it. But better to go Campy throughout, just because :)

I for one would be interested in knowing which Campy cranks and Shimano BB. I'm running Centaur cranks and dislike the AC-H BB, looking for alternatives that don't cost Phil $- Phil BB with the cups will cost almost as much as my frame!

To complicate and/or simplify matters, the high end sugino track cranks (75s and possibly GM's) are ISO and will go on a campy bb like butter.

You mean it the other way around. The Campy ISO hole is slightly bigger. Does anyone know if the Nervar cotterless cranks use ISO or JIS?

That's quite a timely reply

"If you install an ISO crank on a J.I.S. spindle, it will sit about 4.5 mm farther out than it would on an ISO spindle of the same length. Confersely, if you install a J.I.S. crank on an ISO spindle, it will wind up about 4.5 mm farther in than it would on a J.I.S spindle of the same length." -- Sheldon Brown on Square Taper Bottom Bracket Interchangeability (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbtaper.html)

Check the link. It also gives a rundown on which manufacturers make which type and how to mix JIS and ISO parts.

I just picked up a set of sweet Campy Chorus cranks for my bike used on the cheap in hopes they'd work on my Shimano BB, They go on far enough it seems but I think my chainline is around 5-6 mm outside of my cog so I'm going to have to pass them on or replace my BB. The post above is correct: Campy cranks have a smaller hole and won't slide as far onto a shimano BB. Shimano cranks have a larger hole and can slide too far (perhaps to the shoulder) onto a campy BB. Sheldon Brown claims to have mismatched them successfully on many of his bikes, so I don't think it's universally a problem. The weird thing about mine is that it slides on plenty far for me to feel safe on the cranks, and actually the inside of the crank is less than 6mm from my BB so it's definitely going on far enough, but my chainline is still indicating that it's probably the 4.5 mm off that Sheldon speaks of in the above quote. Let me know if you'll be wanting a new BB and perhaps I'll be interested in some kind of BB trade if I can't find another solution for my chainline this week.
